I haven't compiled a yearend chart for my The Max 100 chart since 2004. The reason why was because in 2005, my chart went on a 5-month hiatus so I didn't have a year's worth of charts to include so I went to what I called "magazine" style format where I hand-picked my favourite 50 songs of the year regardless of their chart performance or singles-status. I still do that now and consider that my main Best Songs of the year but I figure now that I've gotten my chart spreadsheet up to date, I can actually easily compile my Top 100 based on my weekly charts which is what the following list is. Before I begin to post them, I will link you to my Top 50 songs that I posted on my blog last week. www.themaxonline.net/2012/12/17/best-songs-of-2012/I will post my Top 100 Max 100 singles chart over the next few days in increments of ten.

The next batch.
I'll do ongoing commentary as I post the sections as well. With this batch, I've once again been reminded about how short the chart runs on my chart have become. It was pretty normal for at least one or two songs a year to hit the one-year mark with a dozen or more songs lasting 30+ weeks on the chart. However, this year, a song in this batch (Alex Clare) reaches 30 weeks and is among the longest running hits in 2012. Even comeback #1 hits by Alanis Morissette have only lasted 13 weeks on but she still places decently on the yearend chart at #83.
Pos WK PP Title - Artist 90 14 4 Part Of Me - Katy Perry
89 18 11 Ass Back Home - Gym Class Heroes f/Neon Hitch
88 14 8 Marina - Christina Martin

Songs that debut high also tend to peak relatively quickly so they might fall normally but they don't have the advantage of having the rise upward too so it appears quick. I think it might actually be close to whatever the record for shortest run for a #1 song is. I'll check on that and report back. On the flipside, as we'll see later, album tracks that were later released as singles benefit the most on the yearend chart.
Here's the next ten:
Pos WK PP Title - Artist 80* 21 24 The Theory Of Relativity - Stars
79 19 12 She Wolf (Falling To Pieces) - David Guetta f/Sia
78* 22 19 Thinkin' Bout You - Frank Ocean

A couple side charts now that we're at the halfway point of this countdown, provided by stats from last.fm which account for most of the plays that go through my iTunes, iPhone, iPod and iPad... I think.
Top 30 most played artists [brought to you by last.fm and Apple]
30 (tie). Sondre Lerche/Gotye [104] 29. Chantal Kreviazuk [106] 27. (tie) Pink/Carly Rae Jepsen [107] 26. Norah Jones [116] 25. Katy Perry [117] 24. David Usher [119] 23. Ingrid Michaelson [123] 22. Tegan and Sara [124] 21. Jason Mraz [129]
20. Florence & The Machine [134] 19. Cranberries [142] 18. Rihanna [143] 17. Missy Higgins [147] 16. Serena Ryder [150] 15. Our Lady Peace [158] 14. Whitehorse [159] 13. Ellie Goulding [161] 12. David Guetta [164] 11. Ed Sheeran [171]
10. Sarah Slean [178] 9. Madonna [181] 8. Dragonette [184] 7. Alanis Morissette [203] 6. Kathleen Edwards [256] 5. Lady GaGa [278] 4. Amy Macdonald [288] 3. Brandi Carlile [291] 2. fun. [313] 1. Nicki Minaj [332]
This would be based off of only songs where the artist is the lead, as per how I have my mp3 ID tags set so Nicki Minaj is the clear winner while fun. has a pretty solid second place finish, ending the year as the Top band and Top New Artist. The favourite for the last two years and total overall last.fm #1, Lady GaGa, slips to #5 despite having no new material out in 2012. In fact, her and Sarah Slean (#10) (who is the #2 last.fm artist overall) are the only artist on this list with no new songs or albums out in 2012. The difference, however, is that Sarah's last album was released in late 2011 and carried over to this year. Sondre Lerche (#30) and previous favourite Chantal Kreviazuk (#29) both released live/acoustic albums this year to help fill the gap while 2007 favourite Tegan and Sara (#22) succeeded based off of their late-2011's live/acoustic record and the late 2012 single-release Closer, along with play of their back-catalogue. Alanis Morissette and Madonna benefitted most from back-catalogue play.

Before I continue into the Top 30, I'll post my annual stats and numbers regarding my music purchases. 2012 was far and ahead the biggest year for music purchases in history! Prior to this year, the year in which I bought the most CDs was 2004 when I bought (or attained) 81 CDs (not including downloaded but actual CDs). Although 2011 saw the most CDs that were bought new rather than a significant percentage of them used like in 2004. 2012 saw 113 new CDs added to the collection, more than a 50% increase. Here's a list of the years with the most CDs: 2012: 113 2004: 81 2011: 75 2010: 73 2003: 67 2009: 66 Of these CDs, 38 were bought on the day of release, also a new record surpassing 2009 in which 22 were bought the day they hit stores. 2011 saw only 13. 2012 also saw a record year for soundtracks with 10 new movie music albums added to the collection, besting the previous best year for soundtracks, 1998, which had 8 new ones. 2012 was also an epic year for vinyl with 42 titles added to the overall total. These included albums, 12" singles, 10" EPs and 7" singles. All in all, to add to the already rave reviews of 2012 as a whole for music, the money I spent speaks for itself as I perhaps singlehandedly kept the industry afloat for another year.

The next ten, which contains my artist of the year with all three of her appearances occurring in this block:
Pos WK PP Title - Artist
30 23 7 The Motto - Drake f/Lil'Wayne
29 21 11 Drive By - Train
28 22 18 She's So Mean - Matchbox Twenty
27 21 6 Settle Down - Kimbra
26 20 9 Body Work - Morgan Page w/Tegan and Sara
25 21 1 Turn Me On - David Guetta f/Nicki Minaj
24 23 1 The A Team - Ed Sheeran
23 22 2 Pound The Alarm - Nicki Minaj
22 25 1 Starships - Nicki Minaj
21 22 6 Pride - Amy Macdonald
While she has 3 appearances in the Top 100 of 2012 and the highest is #22, Nicki Minaj had enough points gained from all of the tracks from her Roman Reloaded and Re-Up albums, plus her other singles, to win out as the year's Top Artist, and Top Female Act. David Guetta wins out as the Top Male Act, making Turn Me On (#25) a pretty royal song.
