New York really is an amazing place with an atmosphere like no other ;D Just the feeling of walking through Times Square, among all the bright lights, is incredible, unrivalled anywhere else. The view from the Empire State Building is also incredible and breathtaking. ;D And Central Park is quite beautiful too, like an oasis of nature in the middle of the hustle of the city. Interesting that, among the tourist-type promo shots and WTC remembrance pictures (I was there before they opened up the memorial there so I didn't see it myself), there were some ghetto Bronx pictures there too. (At least, I'm assuming that's what they are, given how Seb described it.) I did get to see how run down some areas of the Bronx are, but it was mostly on the way to the Bronx Zoo, which I really enjoyed. Of course, the subway system there is very convenient and goes everywhere so it was very easy for me to get around. While I did go around Rockefeller Center a bit, I would like to eventually see it around Christmas, as I'm sure that's when it comes alive.

Between the photos I found of New York last night and the stories you guys are telling, I gotta find a way to visit one day. I included those ghetto pictures because I wanted to show the side of the city that the tourist guides don't talk about. Who is Seb?

He used to be here more frequently, but still stops by.

January 11th, 2012 - Riyadh, Saudi ArabiaA sandstorm invading the city: A couple views of how massive the Riyadh tower really is: Some views of the shopping malls: 7 Facts About Riyadh: 1) Riyadh is home to over 5.2 million people, making it the largest city in Saudi Arabia and one of the largest in the Middle East. 2) It is widely considered to be the most conservative city in what might be the most conservative country on earth. Some things that are strictly banned in the city include bars, nightclubs, live music, movie theatres, women drivers and Valentine's Day. 3) During the summer, Riyadh is hot. The average high for the month of July is 110F (43C). 4) 40% of the city's population is foriegn, many of whom are temporary residents. 5) Shopping malls are very popular here, especially during the brutal summers. You'll find stores selling things you wouldn't expect, such as lingerie. 6) Public beheadings take place at a place nicknamed Chop-Chop Square. 7) Five times a day, the city shuts down for prayer, just like the rest of the kingdom. Thanks to anyone who checked out any of this. I know I usually feature tourist-friendly cities, but I decided to take a day off from that. This is a city that really interests me.

That tower really does look interesting over the Riyadh skyline, especially at night! Also interesting to see that, even in a place like Saudi Arabia, McDonald's and Starbucks are still ever-present. Aside from such sights, given all that isn't allowed in there, I'd probably get bored really fast!

Beheadings? What is that? !!! I think I've enjoyed this city, i mean, reading about it, most than the rest you've posted KP. Touristic places well, they are relatively similar. I wanted to see a different city. Riyadh is an awful city, extremely hot, and extremely conservative and boring. But it's cool to read about it lol

I guess as long as you're not in a third world country, you are never too far from home in that sense.

As for the beheadings, that is the Saudi method of execution. The way most of the U.S. uses lethal injections in a private setting, the Saudis cut heads off in public.

^Beheading in the street does seem horrible, but I'm pretty sure they used to do public hangings in the U.S. I'm sure people who are hanged suffer a lot more.
The middle east is probably the least tourist-friendly region of the world, but I think Dubai is a huge exception to that.

Yeah, a lot of the Muslim countries there I wouldn't want to visit, but for some reason, Dubai would be interesting to see.

I've been to Vancouver twice, 13 years apart... so each time, I got a completely different perspective on it. One of my favourite regions is Stanley Park, complete with the Vancouver Aquarium and the totem poles. Quite the scenery there! The UBC campus is quite interesting too, I enjoyed the Museum of Anthropology, they have an interesting collection of artifacts there! Of course, just walking around downtown is an incredible feeling too, with all the shopping available, and it does come alive at night too!
