Week 401 – November 3^rd, 2018

First I’ve to write that there won’t be any flags in this and in the following weeks, because my account where I uploaded my flags has been disabled. Until I’ve not cleared this situation I’m not able to make the flags viewable.

So let’s see how this week looks like. At the top there is a new #1. Paul McCartney took over my chart with his recent single “Fuh you” (#1). It is nice to see that Veteran artists still have a chance to reach #1. Also up one spot and now in the runner’s up position is Annalisa with “Le parole non mentono” (#2, “Words don’t lie”). Last week’s #1 “Halt nicht fest” (#3, “Don’t hold on”) dropped two spots and is now rounding out my podium. Holding their spots are “Head above water” (#4) by Avril Lavigne and “You” (#5) by Matilda.

Directly behind also non-moving are “Mi parli piano” (#6, “Talk to me slowly”) by Emma and “Thru these tears” (#7) by LANY. These four non-moving songs are followed by the first out of two new songs in my Top 10. “Let you love me” (#8) is the 2nd Top 10 hit by Rita Ora. Her only Top 10 had been “I will never let you down” which reached my Top 10 in 2014 and peaked at #6 in June 2014. So let’s welcome her after an absence of more than four years. Next in line is “Rough diamonds fall” (#9) by Luke Sital-Singh. “Rough diamonds fall” is caught between the two new songs in this section of my chart. While “Let you love me” is the highest Top 10 entry “Lay with me” (#10) by Phantoms feat. Vanessa Hudgens is the 2nd highest new song in my Top 10. When I first listened to this song I’ve not seen this happening, but this is a really good song so it deserves the Top 10 honours.

What describes a kind of this year’s music best? Maybe it is the catch phrase “Baby hit me one more time”. I’ve not heard this phrase so often since Britney Spears had her debut hit “… Baby one more time” back in 1998. This year nearly every song with a retro title includes this phrase. The first time I recognized this phrase in a song of 2018 had been “2002” by Anne-Marie which peaked at #18 in July. Three weeks ago “1999” (#34) by Charli XCX feat. Troye Sivan debuted and this song also includes this phrase. And this week US country singer Lauren Alaina debuts with her song “Ladies in the ‘90s” (#65). You’re right this song also includes this phrase. Could it be that “Baby … one more time” is the biggest hit in the 1990’s? I’m not sure, but there are indicators for this fact.

The highest debut is by a well-known German singer which I’ve not charted before. Wolfgang Petry had his biggest hit in the 1990’s with “Die längste Single der Welt” (“The world longest single”; 1996: peaked at #7 in Germany) and “Die längste Single der Welt 2” (1999: peaked at #2 in Germany). Now he released the first single out of his upcoming album “Genau jetzt!” (“Just now”). “Wo sind denn all die Helden” (#48) is a very strong song and at the moment I see this song as potential Top 20 hit. Behind Paul McCartney German Wolfgang Petry is the 2nd oldest male artist on my chart. The 2nd highest debut is by Clara Mae. “Sorry for writing all the songs about you” (#61) is a good song, but at the moment only her 2nd highest charting song. “Rooftop” (#54) could be outperformed in the next weeks. Surprisingly a debut is the 2017 hit “Sign of the times” (#81) by Harry Styles. I really have to say that I didn’t liked this song when it came out, but I just heard this song at the end of the German TV show “Professor T” (is based on a TV show from Belgium). I was flashed and now this song from last year got its debut.

Week 402 – November 10^th, 2018

Last week veteran artist Paul McCartney scored his first #1 on hit on my chart. This week “Fuh you” (#2) dropped one spot, but it is still a good song although it isn’t my #1 anymore. “Fuh you” has been replaced by “Le parole non mentono” (#1, “Words don’t lie”. For Italian singer Annalisa “Le parole non mentono” is her first #1. Beside Emma she is the only Italian singer reaching number #1 since March 2011. I don’t see this song lasting very long at the top, but who cares after scoring a #1 hit. New at the podium is “Head over water” (#3) by Avril Lavigne. This song could do a little bit better than “Fuh you” and “Le parole non mentono” if it goes all the way to #1 which I believe could happen by next week. Former #1 “Halt nicht fest” (#4, “Don’t hold on”) by Ohrenpost dropped one spot. For the first time in my Top is “Let you love me” (#5) by Rita Ora.
At #6 and at #7 you find two former #1 songs. Dropping out of my Top 5 is “You” (#6) by Matilda. Also dropping one spot is “Mi parli piano” (#7, “Talk to me slowly”) by Emma. She released a new single (not from her last album) this week which could perform very well on my chart. Up two spots are “Lay with me” (#8) by Phantoms feat. Vanessa Hudgens. This song is caught between two former #1’s. Before it is “Mi parli pano” and behind it is “Thru these tears” (#9) by LANY. The Top 10 is rounded out with a newcomer. German (?) or Canadian (?) singer Bülow climbed up ten spots with her recent single “Two punks in love” (#10).
This week’s greatest gainer is last week’s debut song “Baby don’t talk” (#43) by Léon. “Baby don’t talk” climbed up 21 spots, but just missed my Top 40. Last week I pointed out that the phrase “… Baby one more time” is very often used in kinda retro songs. This week I highlight cover songs on my chart. I’m sure that you noticed over the years that I’m not charting a lot of cover songs and most of these songs failed to reach my Top 20. With this week I’m charting six cover songs.

The highest one is by Alex Christensen feat. The Berlin Orchestra & Anastacia. They are covering the 90’s hit “Another night” by Real McCoy. Their version is now at #30 and maybe this song reaches my Top 20 as Alex Christensen did last year with the Snap! cover of “Rhythm is a dancer” with the help of Ivy Quainoo. The 2nd highest charting cover song is also from the 90’s. This time is “What is love” by Haddaway. Jaymes Young cover (#55) is a stripped down version of this dance classic I’m grown up with. The next cover version is by Lithuanian singer GJan who scored last year a #1 hit with “Wasn’t easy”, but most of her songs since this smash failed to enter my chart. This week she debuts with the Bob Dylan song “Ring them bells” (#58) from his 1989 album “Oh mercy”. “Ring them bells” is a song for the film “Ashes in the snow”. Then there is Ysabelle Cuevas with the cover (#65) of the actual Shaun hit “Way back home” (#15). Next in line is “True colors” (#70) by XO Cupid feat. Maya Avedis which covers the 80’s classic by Cyndi Lauper. Not to be missed is a ABBA cover. This time it is “SOS” (#73) by Cher.

Let’s go to this week’s highest debut. It is by Italian singer Emma who surprisingly released her new single “Mondiale” (#41, “World”). I really like this song and it should do very well on my chart. Sooner or later this song should reach my Top 10. This song is the only debut within my Top 50. Other debuts are “Baby” (#59) by Clean Bandit feat. Marina & Luis Fonsi, “Don’t you know” (#60) by Justin Caruso feat. Jake Miller, “More than friends” (#63) by Jason Mraz feat. I'm still not sure about your #1, but after a 2nd chance it got its debut. It's no "Cut to the feeling", but I hope "Party for one" will stay for some weeks.

Week 403 – November 17^th, 2018

It seems that I don’t know which song I like best at the moment. This week it turns out that Avril Lavigne’s “Head above water” (#1) is my favourite song at the moment. With this climb to #1 there are seven songs out of ten songs from my Top 10 which had been #1’s over the last weeks. Avril Lavigne is followed by Annalisa with her last week’s #1 “Le parole non mentono” (#2, “Words don’t lie”). Down one spot is Paul McCartney with “Fuh you” (#3) which is completing the podium. The highest charting song which hadn’t been at #1 is “Let me love you” (#4) by Rita Ora. The next former #1 in line is “Halt nicht fest” (#5, “Don’t hold on”) by Ohrenpost.

Just missing my Top 5 is “Lay with me” (#6) by Phantoms feat. Vanessa Hudgens. It is definitely a nice song and deserves this Top 10 status, but when I first listened to this song I haven’t seen this coming. At #7 there is “You” by Matilda which is followed by the last none #1 in my Top 10 “Two punks in love” (#8) by Bülow. This week’s Top 10 is rounded out with the former #1’s “Mi parli piano” (#9, “Talk to me slowly”) by Emma and “Thru these tears” (#10) by Lany.

Speaking about Lany they are taking the chart storm with the B-side to “Thru these tears”. “I don’t love you anymore” (#15) climbed up 17 spots and so this song is this week’s greatest gainer. While this song reached this week’s Top 20 the highest debut can’t be found within my Top 50. “Nada” (#55, “Nothing”) by Shakira is the highest debut, but it missed my Top 50 by five spots. It is a good song in Spanish, but while songs in Italian are regular guests at #1 these kind of songs can hardly be found in my Top 10. The 2nd best new song is “Thank U, next” (#60) by Ariana Grande. Earlier this year she released 4th album “Sweetener” and it seems she had a lot more material so “Thank U, next” is the leading single from her 5th album “Thank U, next” which is up to release during this winter. Directly behind you can find the debut single by 16 year old Austin Brown. “In betweenin’ “ (#61) is solid debut and gives Austin Brown a bright outlook.

Week 404 – November 24^th, 2018

Today I felt a little bit sick, so I had to do postpone this review. Then I had problems with my PC. This is why I’m posting this week’s review later than usual. After fast changes at the top Avril Lavigne defended the #1 with “Head above water” (#1). Avril is a favourite of mine since her wonderful debut song “Complicated”. How time flies! More than 16 years ago I first listened to this song and I played her debut album back and forth. I’m really getting old, but back to the topic. Also holding its position is “Le parole non mentono” (#2, “Words don’t lie”) by Annalisa. New at the podium is “Let you love me” (#3) by Rita Ora. For her this is her first Top 3 hit on my chart. She replaced Paul McCartney’s #1 smash “Fuh you” (#4) which dropped one spot. Completing the Top 5 is “Lay with me” (#5) by Phantoms feat. Vanessa Hudgens. I really haven’t seen this coming, but now this song is taking my chart by storm.

Dropping out of my Top 5 is “Halt nicht fest” (#6, “Don’t hold on”) by German band Ohrenpost. I’ve charted them once before, but this hit came out of nowhere. Technically “Halt nicht fest” is no one hit wonder, but only the future will tell if this is an anomaly. Up one spot is “Two punks in love” (#7) by Bülow. She is followed by LANY. They are celebrating their 2nd Top 10 hit with “I don’t love you anymore” (#8) while “Thru these tears” (#11) dropped out of the Top 10 in its 18th week on chart. The Top 10 is rounded out with two former #1’s. At #9 it is “You” by Matilda and at #10 it is “Mi parli piano” (“Talk to me slowly”) by Emma.

After a week with more than 10 new entries this week is rather calm. The greatest gainer of the week is “Sorry for writing all the songs about you” (#12) by Clara Mae. She just missed her first Top 10 hit, but this song should be in by next. The highest debut is by the Backstreet Boys. At the moment they are the most successful boy band on my chart. And no we aren’t in the 1990’s. Their latest hit song is “Chances” (#67). “Chances” got a solid debut for the moment and don’t see this song reaching the same spheres as “Don’t go breaking my heart”, but who knows. It is a good song and should do well. Other debuts are “Always remember us this way” (#75) by Lady Gaga, “Gimme” (#76) by Megan Davies, “Crush” (#77) by Cigarettes After Sex, “No matter what” (#93) by Calum Scott, “Used to” (#94) by Sandro Cavazza feat. Week 405 – December 1^st, 2018

Once again this year I hadn’t really time to listen to new music. So this week’s edition is more static than ever. In general my Top 5 didn’t move. “Head above water” (#1) by Avril Lavigne scored her 3rd week at the top followed by “Le parole non mentono” (#2, “Words don’t lie”). Still at #3 is Rita Ora with her smash “Let you love me”. Former #1 “Fuh you” (#4) by veteran artist Paul McCartney and “Lay with me” (#5) by Phantoms feat. Vanessa Hudgens are rounding out this part of my chart.
The first moving song is “Two punks in love” (#6) by Bülow. She climbed up one spot with this song. Also up one spot are LANY with “I don’t love you anymore” (#7). These songs are followed by the only new song in my Top 10. “Sorry for writing all the songs about you” (#8) is the first Top 10 hit by Swedish newcomer Clara Mae. If you don’t know this song yet you should definitely check this one out. The last two spots in my Top 10 are going to “Halt nicht fest” (#9, “Don’t hold on”) by Ohrenpost and “You” (#10) by Matilda.

As pointed out above there had been a lot of action. The greatest gainer of the week is “Thank U, next” (#41) by Ariana Grande which only climbed up 11 spots. And there are only two new songs. Both songs are album cuts by Kelly Clarkson. She debuts with “Cruel” (#81) and “Didn’t I” (#82).

Week 406 – December 8^th, 2018

“Head above water” is definitely one of the best songs by Avril Lavigne which she has released over the past years. This week it scored its 4th week at the top, but there is an end in sight. I don’t mean that “Le parole non mentono” (#2, “Words don’t lie”) is the one which could top my chart next week, but this song is still in the runner’s up position. Definitely a chance for reaching #1 has the B-side to “Thru these tears” by LANY. “I don’t love you anymore” (#3) climbed up four spots and is now completing my podium. It’s their 2nd Top 3 hit in total and it could also be the bands 2nd #1 hit which is absolutely great, because before their “Malibu nights” album they only had minor hits on my chart. Down one spot is “Let you love me” (#4) by Rita Ora. The other big winner in my Top 10 is Clara Mae. Her song “Sorry for writing all the songs about you” (#5) – which hasn’t released as a regular single until now, but it had to! – climbed up three spots and is the next big song for me. I’m absolutely sure that this song will reach the top in the near future. This one or “I don’t love you anymore” are ready to replace “Head above water”.

Last week “Lay with me” (#6) reached my Top 5, but this week Phantoms feat. Vanessa Hudgens dropped out. Sorry for that, but this song will stay for some more weeks in my Top 10, so it isn’t that bad. Also dropping one spot is “Two punks in love” (#7) by Bülow. On its way out is “Fuh you” (#8) by Paul McCartney. His single dropped four spots this week. These droppers are followed by two new songs in my Top 10. “Getaway car” (#10) by Taylor Swift climbed up one spot and “Where we go” (#9) by Pink climbed up three spots.

Last week and this week Ariana Grande did very well with her new single “Thank U, next” (#30). Although only climbing up 11 spots this song is once more the greatest gainer of the week. And as last week I hadn’t really time to check out new music, but I listed to two new songs which could now be found on my chart. The highest debut goes to German star Lena and her song “Thank you” (#61). This song got a solid debut, but it should do well in the future. The other one is “Nothing breaks like a heart” (#62) by Mark Ronson feat. Miley Cyrus. I like this song to and I’m sure that this song will also do well in the future.

Week 407 – December 15^th, 2018

There had been two options for this week’s #1. On the one hand I thought about giving LANY their 2nd #1 this year. On the other hand there is Swedish newcomer Clara Mae who recently reached my Top 5. In the end I decided upon LANY’s “I don’t love you anymore” (#1). Clara Mae finished this week in the runner’s up position with “Sorry for writing all the songs about you” (#2). This week LANY had the better end, but in the long run I’ll definitely go with Clara Mae. But wait there is a song which will debut next week and should do more than well. Definitely a choice for #1, but I hadn’t so many #1 debuts before and so Clara Mae should reach the top spot. Dropping down two spots from #1 is Avril Lavigne with “Head above water” (#3). Also down two spots is “Le parole non mentono” (#4, “Words don’t lie”). Rounding out my Top 5 is “Let you love me” (#5) by Rita Ora.

Still near my Top 5 is “Lay with me” (#6) by Phantoms feat. Vanessa Hudgens. This dance song is followed by Bülow’s wonderful hymn “Two punks in love” (#7). Behind these two non-movers is “Where we go” (#8) by Pink which climbed up one spot. So let’s talk about the two new songs in my Top 10. First let’s welcome another singer from Sweden. LÉON got her first Top 10 smash with “Baby don’t talk” (#9). When I first listened to this song I didn’t recognized the hit potential, but this song has grown on me over the last weeks and now it reached my Top 10 for the first time. Reaching the first time my Top 10 is “Mondiale” (#10, “World”) by Emma. She recently released the “Boom edition” for her 2018 album “Essere qui” (“To be here”). “Mondiale” is the first song out of four new songs from this deluxe version.

Last week the 2nd highest debut and this week the greatest gainer of the week is “Nothing breaks like a heart” (#29) by Mark Ronson feat. Miley Cyrus. “Nothing breaks like a heart is a country-disco song and could continue this trend on my chart. Kylie Minogue did very well with her country-disco/pop songs this year. She reached #1 with “Dancing” and “Stop me from falling” (#65). I’m not sure if “Nothing breaks like a heart” has #1 potential, but it is definitely a very good song. The highest debut is by Cœur de Pirate. Finally I had time to check out her 2018 album and I’ve to say that I like this one. So it is no surprise for me to debut her 2nd single out of this album “Somnambule” (#42, “Sleepwalking”). This one has been the only Top 50 debut although 18 songs got their debuts.
