Tober à l'Eau - Annie Villeneuve
The first of four French language songs in the Top 10 this year, "Tomber à l'Eau" spent 3 weeks at #1 this past year. Annie kept the song in the Top 10 for 10 weeks and on the chart overall for 23 weeks. This marked Annie's second number one in a row, following her collaboration with Garou and her sister, 2004's "Le Sucre et le Sel".
9.
Better Alone - Melanie C.
This is the biggest of Melanie C.'s three chart entries this year. She took it to #5 for two weeks, spending 23 weeks on the chart, 9 of which were in the Top 10. Mel had a good year considering her three singles ended the year end chart at #s 24, 14 and 9. This makes Melanie C. the top British act of the year, the #2 female artist of the year and the #2 artist overall. Not bad for a woman who never hit the Top 10 before this past spring...
8.
Touch My Fire - Javine
While Javine's only hit of the year, it was a big one! She reached #2 with the song back in July, giving her the highest charting Eurovision related single ever. She spent 24 weeks in the Top 50, including 11 in the Top 10. With just one single, Javine ranks as the #8 British artist and the #10 female artist of the year.
7.
Un Ange Qui Passe - Annie Villeneuve
This song marked Annie's third trip to the top in a row. This song received a huge boost due to airplay in Québec while I was there on vacation this past summer. Annie spent 4 weeks on top and 24 weeks in the Top 50, 11 of which were in the Top 10. With her two #1s, Annie became the #2 Canadian aritst of the year and the #6 female and overall artist of the year.
6.
En Chantant - Star Academy 4
The first new #1 of 2005, "En Chantant" spent a long 5 week reign on top the chart. This marks the first #1 single for any of the Star Academy/Académie seasons. This songs spent 24 weeks on the chart, reaching #1 in its 3rd week on the chart and spending 12 weeks in the Top 10. With three Top 50 singles, Star Academy 4 is the #1 Continental European act of the year and the #3 Group of the year.
5.
La Bartendresse - Éric Lapointe
Like "Un Ange Qui Passe", "La Bartendresse" received a big boost from my vacation to Québec this summer, leaping from #26 where Éric was in his fourth chart week all the way up to #2 in his fift week. Spending three weeks at #2 behind Annie, he eventually knocked her out to spend 2 weeks on top. Five weeks after falling out of #1, he returned to the top for one more week. The song spent 12 weeks in the top 10 and 26 total on the chart. This marks the biggest foreign language song of the year, and the biggest hit by a Canadian. Éric ended up being the #5 Canadian artist of the year and the #6 Male artist.
4.
From Zero to Hero
Sarah Connor had the biggest hit of her career this past year. Spring vacation in Germany helped boost this song on the chart. The first week of May Sarah lept from #8 to #1where she stayed for one more week. She was displaced by the 6 week #1 run of "Turbo Polka", only to displace that single to make it three weeks total on top. Sarah spent 12 weeks in the Top 10 and 26 weeks on the chart overall. With only one hit, Sarah managed to rank as the #4 Continental European act of the year and the #9 Female Artist.
3.
Almost Here - Brian McFadden & Delta Goodrem
Another song that recieved a boost from vacation in Germany this past year. Brian and Delta took the song to the top for one week in mid-March, sliding back to #2 behind Duran Duran. However, while in Germany, I heard the song everywhere, so the week after, they returned to the top for 5 additional weeks. They stayed in the Top 10 for and amazing 15 weeks and in the Top 50 for 25 weeks. With the help of two other chart singles, Brian McFadden became the top solo male artist of the year and the #10 artist overall. Delta also did well for herself, earning #3 Female artist of the year and #3 artist overall.
2.
Father and Son - Ronan Keating f/Yusuf
Talk about a huge single! This was a mainstay on the chart in the early part of the year, thanks yet again to vacation in Germany. Ronan and Yusuf reached the top in early March, where it stayed for just one week, being bumped out by Brian & Delta. However, it would climb back up and spend 5 weeks at #2, behind them. This song spent an astounding 19 weeks in the Top 10 with 28 weeks on overall. Ronan and Yusuf ending the year as the #s 7 & 8 Male act of the year, while Yusuf became the #4 British act of the year!
1.
Behind These Hazel Eyes - Kelly Clarkson
A song that never even reached #1 takes the #1 spot of the year. This happened last in 2002 when Aaliyah's "More Than A Woman" was the #1 song of the year. That was also the last time a female and American had the Top Song of the Year. Kelly Clarkson's song spent an record-breaking 41 weeks on the chart this year, all within the calendar year. She made her debut the final week of February and it wasn't until December that the song finally left. Of those 41 weeks, 23 weeks in the Top 10, 16 weeks in the Top 5, and 4 weeks at #2! It's no surprise that Kelly ended up #1 in every year-end catagory for which she's eligable: Top American artist, Top Female artist and Top Overall Artist. This was Kelly's year. With her album winding down now, who will replace her as the king/queen of the chart in 2006? Will it be Will Young, Wilfred LeBouthillier, Sugababes, or maybe an act who has yet to break the chart. Tune in next year to find out ;D
