46. "More Than Words," Frankie J.Peak: #3 Certification: Gold 45. "Wake Me Up When September Ends," Green DayPeak: #3 Certification: Gold "Wake Me Up When September Ends" was a heartwrenching, personal song about Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong's father. And if the song wasn't heartwrenching enough, the video delivered the type of raw and uncut emotion you only see in low-budgeted independent films. There were so many things that contributed to the success of this track on the chart, so I won't begin to list them all, but let's just say that everything that happened to it was well deserved. 44. "Mockingbird," EminemPeak: #2 Certification: Gold 43. "In The Rough," Anna NalickPeak: #2 Certification: Gold 42. "1,2 Step," Ciara (Featuring Missy Elliott)Peak: #2 Certification: Platinum Oh, there's a great backstory behind this one. "1, 2 Step" was initially a song that I liked, but not enough, and that caused it to have one of the most unusual chart runs in the history of the Hot 21 Pop. The gains were strong and progressive in the beginning, but with all the competition coming in, it just wasn't strong enough to mix in with the others, so it fell off quickly. Thanks to my purchase of her album, a change of heart came just one week after its fall-off, and the pop-tinged R&B track made a rare re-entry onto the chart. That re-entry gave the song the opportunity to do big things, and it did. "1, 2 Step" eventually peaked at #2 -- where it spent four consecutive weeks -- and was certified Platinum. 41. "Wake Up," Hilary DuffPeak: #9 Certification: Gold Hilary Duff is one of the few "pop stars" that have managed to score a top ten hit with every charted song. While she may not be able to chart every single, the singles that do chart, look very good on her resume. "Wake Up" was just another one of her carefree, catchy pop tunes that caught on and peaked impressively. 40. "Girl," Destiny's ChildPeak: #6 Certification: Gold 39. "Holiday," Green DayPeak: #5 Certification: Gold 38. "Free Yourself," FantasiaPeak: #4 Certification: Gold 37. "Again," Faith EvansPeak: #4 Certification: Gold The return of R&B songstress Faith Evans was a great one. When she released "Again," the first single from her latest album, The First Lady, I was blown away by the brutally honest lyrics, concerning her recent troubles, and the hook was smart enough to have me singing it at all hours of the day. In a very competitive top ten, Evans held her own, scoring a #4 smash hit. 36. "Collide," Howie DayPeak: #3 Certification: Gold "Even the best fall down sometimes... Even the wrong words seem to rhyme..." This wasn't Howie's first hit - in fact, he hit the top ten in 2004 with "Perfect Time Of Day." But in terms of impact, "Collide" takes the cake. With a mix of unique vocal delivery and beautiful lyrics, it's no surprise that "Collide" made it all the way to #3 and went Gold.

Tomorrow night, I will reveal 11-24. 35. "These Boots Are Made For Walkin'," Jessica SimpsonPeak: #2 Certification: Gold When Jessica Simpson covered Nancy Sinatra's "These Boots Are Made For Walkin'," instead of opting to recreate the original's defiant and strong approach, newly-single Simpson decided to spice it up with a sexual confidence and country twang that would work better for modern pop. And that video? Let's just say that Nancy Sinatra wouldn't have dared or thought of making a video like that when her version hit the airwaves. Classy? You be the judge. Fun, discussion-worthy and attention-grabbing? Most definitely. Jessica Lachey took this one all the way to #2, and if not for pop peer Kelly Clarkson's dominance, the story might have been written a little differently. 34. "Incomplete," Backstreet BoysPeak: #1 (1 week) Certification: Gold With the boyband craze having been over for quite some time, the Backstreet Boys showed no fear when they reunited and returned to the music world with "Incomplete." The climactic ballad, featuring some outstanding vocals from member AJ McLean, caught me by surprise at the time of its release. When your expectations are low, and you get a great package, it's hard to not reward it with a "thank you." Their "thank you" was a one-week stay at #1 and a Gold certification. Unfortunately, the song did not experience the good-to-excellent levels of longevity most #1s do, and fell very quickly. But that's alright, the peak speaks for itself. Congratulations, guys! 33. "Boyfriend," Ashlee SimpsonPeak: #1 (1 week) Certification: Gold After two consecutive underperforming singles (both taken from her breakout album, Autobiography), Ashlee struck back with "Boyfriend" (the first single from her latest effort, I Am Me), with hopes to match or duplicate the success of her 2004 #2 hit, "Pieces Of Me." Well, not only did she match the success of that song, but she also achieved her first #1 hit in the process. Despite controversy, rumors and ridicule from the mainstream media, this is one pop star that's not going down without a fight, and whether you hate it or love it, the underdog's on top. I can't predict her future career on the Hot 21 Pop, but I will say that 2006 shouldn't be too difficult for the youngest of the Simpson clan to score a hit. 32. "Over," Lindsay LohanPeak: #7 Certification: Gold 31. "American Baby," Dave Matthews BandPeak: #4 Certification: Gold 30. "1 Thing," AmeriePeak: #3 Certification: Gold It's like the sound of a sweet growl hovering over one of the most effortly unique instrumentals in recent memory. The premise and execution of "1 Thing," production-wise and vocal-wise, was genius enough to place the young R&B diva in the top three of the chart in the spring, giving her the first hit of her career, and hopefully, not the last. 29. "Lonely No More," Rob ThomasPeak: #1 (1 week) Certification: Gold 28. "Hollaback Girl," Gwen StefaniPeak: #5 Certification: Gold 27. "Cool," Gwen StefaniPeak: #3 Certification: Gold 26. "La Tortura," Shakira (Featuring Alejandro Sanz)Peak: #2 Certification: Gold With "La Tortura," sexy international superstar Shakira broke the Hot 21 Pop mold, by being the first artist ever (male or female) to place an all-spanish language song on the chart. When the sexy, reggaeton-inspired latin pop song reached #2 in June, it opened doors for future non-english songs to have the same opportunity. 25. "Bring 'Em Out," T.I.Peak: #1 (3 weeks) Certification: Platinum

24. "Oh," Ciara (Featuring Ludacris)Peak: #10 Certification: Platinum 23. "U Don't Know Me," T.I.Peak: #2 Certification: Platinum If you're a T.I. fan, "U Don't Know Me," was definitely one of the highlights of the year. By releasing "U Don't Know Me" and having it go all the way to #2, T.I. proved that the enormous success of his predecessor single, "Bring 'Em Out," was no fluke, and that he could hype the party, as well as keep it gangsta. 22. "Only You," Josh KelleyPeak: #1 (1 week) Certification: Gold 21. "Lighters Up," Lil' KimPeak: #1 (2 weeks) Certification: Gold 20. "Rich Girl," Gwen Stefani (Featuring Eve)Peak: #1 (1 week) Certification: Platinum Forget Mariah Carey for a second -- let's talk about Gwen Stefani's solo emancipation, which impacted the music world in 2005. Stefani paired up with rapper Eve for the second single from Love.Angel.Music.Baby to delight us with the catchy, reggae-influenced pop number, "Rich Girl." After hovering around the top three for four weeks, the song finally logged in a single week at #1, and became the second of Stefani's five consecutive top 10 singles. 19. "Spoiled," Joss StonePeak: #1 (1 week) Certification: Platinum Everyone knows Joss Stone has the soulful voice of an angel, but sometimes her voice can go in directions that still take you by surprise. On "Spoiled," her voice definitely went to those places, and boy, was I surprised. Accompanied by a well-directed music video, "Spoiled" made its official debut on the May 11, 2005 chart, at #16. That next week, the song earned a 'Greatest Gainer' bullet, flying all the way up to #8. The following weeks were equally as impressive, but not as impressive as her one-week #1 bow in late June. No need to thank me, Joss. You deserved to be spoiled in 2005. 18. "How Could You," MarioPeak: #4 Certification: Platinum When Mario dropped the second single from his sophomore album, entitled "How Could You," disappointment was written on many faces and charts, but not on mine. With its breezy, post-winter feel and enjoyably contrived lyrical content, "How Could You," proved to be a successful follow-up to the #1 smash hit, "Let Me Love You," peaking at #4 and eventually going Platinum. 17. "Touch," OmarionPeak: #3 Certification: Platinum 16. "It's Like That," Mariah Carey (Featuring Fatman Scoop)Peak: #2 Certification: Platinum 15. "Shut Up Bitch," Lil' KimPeak: #2 Certification: Platinum The bluntly titled "Shut Up Bitch" was initially served as a buzz single to promote Lil' Kim's then-forthcoming studio album, The Naked Truth, but it took on the life of an official release when it hit the chart on August 3, 2005. For a woman headed to do time in prison, the petite hip-hop queen showed no signs of defeat or weakness, boldly putting those who have disrespected and clowned her for years, in their place. What stood out the most about this track, was the humor value. Often in the hip hop genre, artists take themselves way too seriously, and Kim put an end to that trend by showing the world just how self-aware she is and just how much the gossip rolls off her implants chest. The track soared all the way to #2 and became quite a staple in the top ten for 12 weeks! Aside from easily earning Platinum status, "Shut Up Bitch" managed to last long enough to compete with Kim's first official single, "Lighters Up," making her the only artist in Hot 21 Pop history to simultaneously place two songs in the top ten. You can lock the Queen of Hip Hop up, but you can't stop her shine -- not on my watch. 14. "Gold Digger," Kanye West (Featuring Jamie Foxx)Peak: #1 (1 week) Certification: Platinum After failing to chart with the brilliant, but all-too serious and thematic "Diamonds (From Sierra Leone)," Kanye West returned with good friend Jamie Foxx, serving up a nice mix of hip hop and soulful R&B, entitled "Gold Digger." The infectiously catchy song was an instant favorite of mine, and that was no secret if you followed its chart run. When the song hit #1 on September 21, 2005, it became West's second chart topper, and solidified his title as one of the most successful male artists to ever have graced the chart. Even though the song only managed one week on top, it hovered in the top five for quite some time, and didn't leave the chart until pressure from newbies became too hard to handle. If you ask me, it's one of his greatest accomplishments, musically and statistically. If you ask Kanye -- well, he might say I don't care about rap people. Come on, Kanye! You know as well as I do, that I love rap people. 13. "Shine On," Ryan CabreraPeak: #1 (2 weeks) Certification: Platinum As of this very moment, Ryan Cabrera sits up there with the best of them, in terms of overall success. His record of three #1 singles, including "Shine On," is nothing short of outstanding, and if he keeps going at the rate he's going, it's going to be pretty difficult for others to equal or steal his supreme spot. With his unique ability to craft damn-near perfect pop songs, Ryan Cabrera did pop proud in 2005 with the release of "Shine On," which became a double-week #1 over the summer. Will 2006 be another spectacular year for Mr. Cabrera? That remains to be seen. But one thing's for sure -- he definitely has nothing left to prove, and believe me, that's a great thing. 12. "Speed Of Sound," ColdplayPeak: #1 (2 weeks) Certification: Platinum 11. "Cater 2 U," Destiny's ChildPeak: #2 Certification: Platinum In the past, the always-controversial Destiny's Child were all about strength and independence. Unless you were hiding under a rock from 1999-2001, you know that they never hesitated to stamp their feminist stance on pop culture. In the summer of 2005, everyone who witnessed Beyonce and the gang sing about being independent women, got a dosage of pure hypocrisy when "Cater 2 U" hit the airwaves, as the trio's fourth single from their final album Destiny Fulfilled. Initially, I had a problem with "Cater 2 U," and not from a feminist's point of view, but from a woman's point of view. With eye-popping lyrics like, " My life would be purposeless without you" and " Tap me on the shoulder, I'll roll over / I'm here to serve you," it was more than obvious that the girls wanted to take "dedication to your man" to the furthest level. It was almost as if Kelly, Beyonce and Michelle were setting women back 2,000 years and essentially becoming slaves to their men and not the equal partner a woman should desire to be. But what I didn't question was whether or not their man was doing the same for them. Just because they didn't specify the lengths their lovers go to, to please them, does not mean those lengths do not exist. Believing it was a two-way street, made it much easier to swallow. I was able to enjoy the amazing vocal arrangement, the smooth and laid back Scott Storch production, and the creatively-harmonious melody that got stuck in the back of my head for many months. In fact, I began to enjoy the song so much, that it resulted in one of the most successful top 10 runs in the history of the chart. Yes, that's right, "Cater 2 U" spent an incredible 14 weeks in the top ten. Despite peaking as a runner-up, the ladies of Destiny's Child should take pleasure in knowing that they were more successful than a very large percentage of the songs that DID hit #1 in 2005. That's an enormous feat in itself.

10. "Hung Up," MadonnaPeak: #1 (6 weeks) Certification: Gold Impact/Success: The disco-inspired, Abba-sampled "Hung Up" made its debut at #14 on the Hot 21 Pop in early November, making it one of the second highest debuts of the year. It zoomed up the chart quicker than a ray of light, inevitably hitting #1 within three weeks. Little did her competition know, that the pop queen would remain at the coveted throne for the final six weeks of 2005. Random Fact You Should Know: "Hung Up" is only Madonna's second top 10 hit (not including featured credits), as the majority of singles from her disasterous 2003 outing, American Life, either peaked miserably, or failed to chart. 9. "Fix You," ColdplayPeak: #1 (3 weeks) Certification: Platinum Impact/Success: The broody, but uplifting second single from Coldplay's latest effort, X&Y, did extraordinarily well on the chart, following the trend their previous singles have started. Thanks to frontman Chris Martin's unique falsetto vocal prowess, and a climax that begs for emotional invest, the song managed to top the chart for three consecutive weeks and score the band their fourth top 5 hit. Random Fact You Should Know: Coldplay is currently the most successful band/group in the history of the chart. 8. "Since U Been Gone," Kelly ClarksonPeak: #1 (2 weeks) Certification: Platinum Impact/Success: "Since U Been Gone" is like a nice, cold glass of lemonade on a hot summer day. Not only does it go down easy, but it quenches your thirst for greatness, almost immediately. The insanely catchy and radio-friendly pop number, featuring some of the most boombastic vocals since Christina Aguilera's wail on Lady Marmalade, actually made its debut in the fall of 2004, but it really shined in 2005. After experiencing a bit of a struggle, the song re-ignited its flame in early February, and later that month, it enjoyed the first of two consecutive weeks at the top spot. To put it simply, Kelly Clarkson delivered pop perfection, and it was treated as such. Random Fact You Should Know: "Since U Been Gone" fell off the chart just one week before it was to recieve its 2x Platinum certification. If it had held on for one more week, Kelly would currently be the only artist to have two singles certified 2x Platinum. 7. "Truth Is," FantasiaPeak: #2 Certification: Platinum Impact/Success: The truth is that Fantasia simply ruled the charts with the first official single from her debut album, for nearly 5 months! The extremely competitive song battled the old and new in the top ten for eleven weeks, and even played runner-up to three number one songs, non-consecutively. With longevity this incredible, who needs the top spot? Random Fact You Should Know: "Truth Is" flipped flopped between #8 and #9 for three consecutive weeks. 6. "Breathe (2am)," Anna NalickPeak: #1 (6 weeks) Certification: Platinum Implact/Success: Anna Nalick is the most successful female debut artist of all time on the Hot 21 Pop, thanks to her super-smash #1 hit, "Breathe (2am)." When "Breathe (2am)" entered the chart at #10, there was little doubt that she wouldn't make it all the way to the top -- the only question was when. Two weeks after debuting, Nalick managed to lock it down at the top, and get this -- she did it for SIX consecutive weeks straight, with absolutely no interruption, whatsoever. The only thing that hinders the song's legacy is its relatively disappointing shelf life. For being such a monster hit, it only logged in 14 weeks total on the chart, and fell off the week after it was certified Platinum. Despite that noteworthy shortcoming, "Breathe (2am)," is not only one of the biggest hits of the year, it's one of the longest running #1s of all time. Random Fact You Should Know: "Breathe (2am)" is currently credited as the third highest debuting song of all time on the chart.
