20. Darren Hayes - PopularI'm willing to sleep my way to the top I wanna be popular I don't wanna keep my feet on the ground I wanna be popularDarren Hayes was the biggest surprise for me in 2004. I always thought his voice was okay and that Savage Garden was good but I never thought he'd go and make music this phenomenal. "The Tension And The Spark" is probably my favorite pop album of all time, 'cause I've been playing it non-stop for five months and I'm still not tired of it. This first single was just brilliant, even though it was a wrong move commercially. 19. Destiny's Child - Through With LoveI've given so much in the past, for a love I never had, I'm through with it I'm I'm through with love, I'm through with, through with love I'm finally giving it upThough I wasn't impressed by Destiny's Child's latest album, this track stood out above all others. It is now my favorite song by them, and with good reason. Michelle's bridge is way cooler than anything Beyoncé has ever sung, and the piano melody is beautiful and catchy. Definitely worthy of a top 20 position. 18. Utada Hikaru - Devil InsideEverybody wants me to be their angel Everybody wants something they can cradle They don't know I burn They don't know I burn2004 was also the year of JPop, with Ayumi Hamasaki leading the way and Utada Hikaru trailing behind. Still, the latter delivered a solid album (even though she should stick to Japanese), with this song shining the most. "Devil Inside" somehow reminded me of Bowser castle, which was a definite plus. For weeks I regularly played it and it is still a great song. 17. Hilary & Haylie Duff - Our Lips Are SealedSpreading rumors, so far from true Dragged up from the underworld Just like some precious pearlHilary Duff had a large share of amazing pop hits in 2004, and I just loved the Duffs' cover of "Our Lips Are Sealed", even though most people think they destroyed the original. I am one of the few who recognize how vastly they improved a boring song, and how worthy it is of a high position on every year-end chart. 16. Kelly Clarkson - BreakawayI'll spread my wings and I'll learn how to fly Though it's not easy to tell you goodbye Gotta take a risk, take a chance, make a change And break awayDiana DeGarmo may be my favorite American Idol, but I love Kelly as well and this song is probably the high point of her career so far. I loved "Breakaway" on first listen and never stopped doing so. Though the album was disappointing because of the lack of variety, this song is a classic in my book. She should release it here.

15. Mariah Carey - Bringin' On The Heartbreak (#1) You're such a secret Misty eyed and shady Baby, how you hold the key Oh, you're like a candle Your flame slowly fadin' Burnin' out and burnin' me Can't you seeThis was my favorite song of 2003, and it kept going strong throughout most of 2004. By far Mariah's best song, she totally reinvented a bad Def Leppard song, turning it into a masterpiece. The high note at the end has an odd addictive effect, making you want to listen to the song again and again. It deserved to be a huge hit, but it was never given a chance. 14. Darren Hayes - I Like The WayThe decadence of giving in to desire Creates such entropy within Looking for love in spiritual faces Blind to the art of fabricationInitially my favorite song on Darren's second album, but it was soon eclipsed by a couple of other songs. It's still extremely good though, and would do well as a single. 13. Ayumi Hamasaki - InspireMou konna jidai dakaratte Sorette dou iu iiwake Nee ai dato ka yume dato ka wo Kuchi ni suru koto wa, kakko warui koto nanka janai
(You are blaming your age But why the excuse? You see, to talk about love or dreams Is not uncool at all)This song is so awesome, it was what turned me into a fan of hers. It's a guitar-driven song with electronic effects all over the place, and Ayumi practically rap-singing the chorus. I may not literally know what she says, but in music understanding the words is one of the least important aspects. 12. Vanessa Carlton - White HousesMaybe you were all faster than me We gave each other up so easily These silly little wounds will never mend I feel so far from where I've been So I go, and I will not be back here again I'm gone as the day is fading on white houses I lie, put my injuries all in the dust In my heart is the five of us In white housesVanessa's second album may not be as good as her first, but this song is better than anything on "Be Not Nobody". It's the catchiest song she has made, and I could theoretically have it on repeat indefinitely without being driven crazy. I hope that the flops she had to face with this album won't keep her from making new music. 11. Blink 182 - I Miss You (#33) Hello there, the angel from my nightmare The shadow in the background of the morgue The unsuspecting victim of darkness in the valley We can live like Jack and Sally if we want Where you can always find me We'll have Halloween on Christmas And in the night we'll wish this never ends We'll wish this never endsThis was definitely a surprise. I was never too fond of Blink 182 except for "Stay Together For The Kids", and then they went ahead and released the great "Feeling This" and the awesome "I Miss You". Though the album that features these two songs isn't good at all, I have to give them props for this masterpiece.

10. Diana DeGarmo - DreamsMonth: July Peak: #1 (1 week) I'm looking at you And I see my life Passing before my eyes And when the journey's over And all my dreams come true I'll dream of you I'll dream of you I'll dream of youThis song is really cheesy. When I first heard it, I wasn't really impressed, disappointed actually because I expected so much more from Diana. But somehow it ended up becoming extremely good with repeated listenings. When she belts at the end, supported by a choir, it just sounds incredible. I hope American Idol 4 will bring someone who is as good as Diana. 9. Hilary Duff - FlyMonth: August Peak: #1 (1 week) And when you're down and feel alone Just wanna run away Trust yourself and don't give up You know you better than anyone else
In a moment, everything can change Feel the wind on your shoulder For a minute, all the world can wait Let go of yesterdayGreat uplifting song. I don't really respect Hilary's artistic abilities (though she did co-write "Haters" and "Mr. James Dean", two songs I love) but I have to give her props for that eerie robotic singing voice and what her producers manage to do with it. Her catchy pop songs should be celebrated across the world, because without happy music we would all be depressed. 8. Emma Bunton - Crickets Sing For AnamariaMonth: January Peak: #1 (1 week) So in a little while, she waited till the lights were low She went out the window to her beau, and so
There's a lot of huggin' him A lot of kissin' him A lot of huggin' him A lot of kissin' him A lot of happy talk A lot of moon above But very little time But very little time To make a lot of love To make a lot of love Which is a normal thing To make a lot of love For it was summertime When all the crickets sing And in the summertime
When anyone's in love, the crickets sing a happy song But they didn't do their repertoire for longI loved this song instantly. Emma had always been my favorite Spice Girl, but her solo stuff wasn't anything special, at least not until I heard "Maybe". And when I heard "Crickets", I realized that this sort of silly, happy music was exactly what she needed to get back on top. Unfortunately, both singles weren't as big as I hoped they would be, and achieved little outside the UK. But who cares really, she's rich enough already and she's made me happy with this masterpiece. 7. Nightwish - Wish I Had An AngelMonth: May Peak: #2 I wish I had an angel For one moment of love I wish I had your angel Your Virgin Mary undone I'm in love with my lust Burning angelwings to dust I wish I had your angel tonightThen there's Nightwish. They've been my favorite band for almost four years now, and this year they released an album even better than their previous ones. "Wish I Had An Angel" is a great song, one of the few where bassist Marco also contributes some vocals. Though I'd say half of the songs on "Once" are better than this, it still reaches #7 on my year end chart. 6. Hilary Duff - Come Clean (#18) Month: January Peak: #1 (2 weeks) I'm shedding Shedding every color Trying to find a pigment of truth Beneath my skin
'Cause different Doesn't feel so different And going out is better Than always staying in Feel the windYes, another Hilary Duff track, and by far her best. It was #18 last year, and #6 this year, which says a lot. It just doesn't get old. Though the song was ruined by its radio and video edits, and wasn't as big of a hit as it could've been because of that, the album track is absolute pop perfection, with top notch production and flawlessly generated vocals. I hope she'll never stop "making" music.

5. Anastacia - Sick And TiredMonth: March Peak: #2 No warning of such a sad song Of broken hearts My dreams of fairy tales and fantasies, oh, were torn apart I lost my peace of mind somewhere along the way I knew there'd come a time you'd hear me say I'm sick and tired of always being sick and tired
Dil la liya be-parvah dey naal Dil la liya be-parvah dey naal I've not always liked Anastacia. Though her first single "I'm Outta Love" was tolerable, the rest of her first album singles were trash. Then when she came out with "Paid My Dues" and "One Day In Your Life", I really started to like her. But it wasn't until 2004 that I turned into a fan. "Sick And Tired", the second single of her incredible self-titled album, instantly became one of my favorite songs. I think it's her best song vocally, and it's also really original. It's sad she still hasn't found fame in her own country. 4. Darren Hayes - DarknessMonth: November Peak: #1 (1 week) Ever wonder why I never really truly connect Although my eyes are open I can hold your gaze but I'm never connected, never connected I am famous for my generosity They say I am the kindest It is easier to give than receive love, give than receive love
It doesn't really matter where it all began All I know I was covered in darkness, covered in darkness This mesmerizing song was actually a grower for me. It was really boring at first because nothing seemed to be happening in the song, but eventually the lyrics and that beautiful beat just hit me and I had to play the song over and over, even though it's quite long. I still play it at least twice a day (and I've had the song since August), it's one of those all-time favorites that I'll never get tired of.

3. Anastacia - Left Outside AloneMonth: February Peak: #1 (9 weeks) And I wonder if you know How it really feels, to be left outside alone When it's cold out here Well maybe you should know Just how it feels, to be left outside alone, to be left outside alone
I tell ya all my life I've been waiting For you to bring a fairytale my way Been living in a fantasy without meaning It's not okay, I don't feel safe, I need to prayThis song is just brilliant. Usually I'm against female singers going for a rockier edge but it did Anastacia nothing but good. "Left Outside Alone" was a big, well-deserved hit for Anastacia in Europe which sent her album flying off the shelves. After her breast cancer I feared her career would suffer but she came back stronger than ever. Her claim to have invented "sprock", a mixture of soul, pop, and rock, was a bit over the top, but this single and her album sure are incredible. 2. Darren Hayes - HeroMonth: October Peak: #1 (15 weeks) Outside, confidence is king I am all that you're projecting Inside, feel the rising tide And the revolution's deafening
I was trying to hide my opposing side Trying to reconcile my Jekyll and Hyde
Ladies and gentlemen listen up please I don't wanna be your hero (No, I am not open, parts of me are broken) Do yourself a favor, save yourself Don't pick me, find someone else (Why'd you want to bother, find yourself another)I wonder why I thought this song was one of the weakest on the album when I first listened to it. It's so brilliantly written and produced, it could well be my favorite pop song ever. The chorus is perhaps the catchiest piece of music that has ever consumed my brain, everything about this song is just so perfect. The electronic beats and bits, the vocals, the lyrics, it's songs like these that deserve to be more than just an unknown track on an album no one has heard. Unfortunately for Darren, one song is even better, and I'll get to that one soon.
