30 The Special Two - Missy Higgins HP: Did not chart. This is a beautiful song off Missy Higgins's debut album 'The Sound of White'. I didn't chart it as I didn't really know much about it until I got the album, but it was a song on 'The Missy Higgins EP' that she released last year but which charted this year, the same week her 'Scar EP' debuted at number one. That's why I've charted it. It is a good song. 29 Run - Snow Patrol HP: 2 This song holds a bit of a special place in my world. I finished school this year and at our graduation breakfast this song was played with highlights of my year level's time at our school. It is a great song in its own right too. 28 Older Than You - Eskimo Joe HP: 4 Eskimo Joe are one of the best known bands in Australia, and one of a number of emerging artists who have come out of Western Australia in recent years. This is a wonderful little song with a great hook. 27 Scar - Missy Higgins HP: 3 This song just completely blew me and no doubt many others away when it crashed into the ARIA chart at #1 this year. I simply had never heard of her before this; since then this song has become one of the hugest radio airplay hits of the year. The opening of it is awesome. 26 Somebody Told Me - The Killers HP: 6 This song has been another huge radio airplay hit here in Australia, and it's probably fair to say that the style of music that The Killers and also Franz Ferdinand do may well come up a lot next year as well. Great chorus, awesome beginning. 25 Thank You - Jamelia HP: 2 This has certainly been my favourite of the 5 Jamelia songs from this year. She made it big here with an ARIA #1 with 'Superstar' however it was her second single (this one) which I really warmed to. A nice style, nice song. 24 My Completeness - Thirsty Merc HP: 1 [3 weeks] Thirsty Merc were one of the huge breakthroughs in Australia for 2004. They haven't had enormous ARIA chart success but they've worked tirelessly all year and their latest single 'Someday Someday' is getting some great airplay. When I first heard this song I had no idea who sung it, I only knew that it would be my #1 that week! A nice catchy song. 23 Rhythm Bandits - Junior Senior HP: 1 [2 weeks in 2003, 1 week in 2004] This song endured perhaps the strangest charting this year. I debuted it at number one last year, directly after their first hit 'Move Your Feet' had been my #1 for 3 weeks. As it wasn't going to be released here until around February 2004, it kind of faded away, but when the video clip started being shown this year this song re-entered at 18 and jumped to #1 the following week. The video clip for this is one of the best of the year, and it is also a very catchy song. 22 One - George HP: 1 [2 weeks] George are one of my favourite artists and one of the most-loved ones in the country. The neat thing with George is that one of the two siblings in the group, Katie and Tyrone Noonan, sing the songs. Katie is widely regarded as having one of the best voices in the country, but this was a Tyrone-sung song (backed up by Katie though) and he sung it to perfection. Unfortunately, George announced an 'extended break' this week from music, which is fair enough given all that has gone on for them the past 2 years. 21 The Way You Move - Outkast HP: #8 This song didn't survive terribly long in my chart. It charted not long after I charted 'Hey Ya' so kinda got caught up in it all. But it is a great song and one of my favourites from the first few months of the year. It is groovy too. So we're down to the top 20! You can see the full chart thus far at www.geocities.com/brosa0sam/eoy2004.html .

#6, although it did spend a higher-than-average time in the top 20. I see. It hit #2 on my chart, and broke the record for most weeks on with 17, at the time. Now the record is higher.

20 Fork In The Road - 1200 Techniques HP: 3 This is a really nice ballad-style song from this aussie hip-hop/dance group. They always come up with nice video clips as well, and this is no exception. The vocals of Aaliyah's brother, Rashaad Houghton, really add something to this song and make it great. 19 Ten Days - Missy Higgins HP: 7 This is a much quieter song than the hit 'Scar', but still very catchy which a great chorus. This is one of many great songs on her album. 18 The Cactus That Found The Beat - Missy Higgins HP: 1 [1 week] I've not yet had the fortune of seeing Missy Higgins live but I'm told this is a crowd favourite. It goes for around 2 minutes and the only instrument in it is her piano. It is a very groovy song. 17 The Reason - Hoobastank HP: 6 This is one of the great anthem songs of 2004. The chorus is just so well put together. This is certainly one great song. 16 This Fire - Franz Ferdinand HP: 3 A very infectious song with a great beating, great chorus and awesome video clip.

15 Transformers Theme - Regurgitator HP: 1 [1 week] This was one of the longest-charting songs this year. This is the theme song that Regurgitator did for the 'Transformers' Xbox/ps2 game (the game was made by an australian company), and as i liked it a lot, and one of the music video shows showed it, I decided to chart it. It's very different to the original version as it is not as 'rock'-driven I suppose you could say. I doubt it'll be used for the 'transformers' movie that I've only just found out about. 14 Everytime (Remix) - Britney Spears HP: 2 This is an equal-highest charting song for Britney on my chart. I first heard the remix on radio not knowing what it was, and the remix beat in the background made it hard to pick Britney's voice in the first few lines but I was pleasantly surprised to learn it was her. I don't know whether the remix that was played on radio was for australia only or not, I doubt it. The video clip is great and it's probably the only time I like the original, slow version. 13 Ghettomusick - Outkast HP: 1 [1 week] I wasn't entirely into this song when I first heard it, however it's grown on me the past 4-5 weeks to the point where it made number one last week. The video clip for this is just outstanding and one that makes me like the song even more - now that's the sign of a good video clip! 12 Better Off Alone - Grinspoon HP: 3 This is a really, really nice song. It's got a real anthem-style sound about it, similar to Hoobastank's 'The Reason' and other similar ones. Grinspoon's singles over the years have been awesome, however I must admit to not following up my liking towards them. 11 Take Me Out - Franz Ferdinand HP: 1 [2 weeks] This is one of the few songs this year which had two distinct parts to the song. They complement each other really well. This song still gets huge airplay here.

10 Amazing - George Michael HP: 2 This song is one of those which has been given heavy airplay in 2004. A very catchy song and one of two great upbeat songs from George Michael this year. 9 Run To Paradise - Nick Skitz vs The Choir Boys HP: 1 [1 week] One of the few songs to make it past 20 weeks on my chart this year, Nick Skitz did an awesome job in remixing this 'Choir Boys' classic. Great dance music. 8 Bigger Than My Body - John Mayer HP: 8 This song is a late 2003/early 2004 song, and if I recall rightly only spent two or so weeks in the top 10. It's a much better song than my charting of it suggests though. The opening to it is just superb as is the chorus. It's one of the few songs from the beginning of the year that I've been able to listen to and love every time it's played on the radio this year. Good stuff. 7 Flawless (Go To The City) - George Michael HP: 1 [3 weeks] When I saw the video clip to this song I knew it would make #1. It's a great song, and a great use of a sample of an older [though not that old] song. The video clip is just so awesome for this. 6 I Am Tha 1 - Mr Timothy featuring Inaya Day HP: 6 This was one of the few songs that I charted for more than 20 weeks. This is a real great dance track, and, well, the best one of the year....

5 My Immortal - EvanescenceHighest position: 2 This is my favourite ballad of the year. The great song is backed up by a brilliant video clip. Very touching. 4 Black Betty - SpiderbaitHighest position: 2 This cover of the old Ram Jam song gave Spiderbait its first #1 on the ARIA chart ever, and the first 'rock' song in a long time too. It deserves that accolade as well, it is an awesome song and well worth your while downloading it or otherwise. i'll put the final three here tomorrow.

Well, it's new years eve here so here's the top 3 ! 3 This Is A Love Song - Little BirdyHighest position: 1 [8 weeks] Little Birdy have been one of the huge breakthrough bands in Australia from the past 18 months. They've been together for just over a year, and yet the music they've produced is just awesome. Granted, Katy Steele's vocals are certainly not for everyone, however I like them and think the songs are great. This is the title song from their EP earlier in the year, and it is just a small (around 2 1/2 minutes) but very rock-driven song. Very, very catchy stuff and it deserved the 8 weeks at #1 that it enjoyed. 2 Sunsets - PowderfingerHighest position: 1 [2 weeks] This song was my first #1 for 2004, and has certainly been a favourite of mine over the entire year. It became even more special when played at my school's speech night when the school farewelled us year 12 students. This is some seriously great rock, just a really great song and a nice video clip too. 1 The Drop - RegurgitatorHighest position: 1 [10 weeks] I hadn't decided the #1 with five very strong contenders (all in the top 5) until a few days ago, and this song eventually stood out and is a deserved #1 of 2004 for me. Regurgitator recorded their latest album 'MishMash!' in a 'bubble' in the very middle of Melbourne, Big Brother-style. This meant that people in the busiest part of Melbourne were able to watch them recording, sleeping, eating etc. for 21 days. This was one of the first songs they completed while in the bubble and was the first single, released while they were still in the bubble!! The video clip was a compilation of 'Bubble' footage. 'The Drop' has a great chorus and all that, and with 10 weeks at #1 deserves, and gets, my #1 of 2004. So there you have it - you can view the full chart at www.geocities.com/brosa0sam/eoy2004.html
