I thought for sure it was going to be Janet Jackson on my chart. But she's in second place finally reaching #1 on her 14th try with "Come Back To Me".
But the winner is Diana Ross who didn't reach #1 until her 20th charted song.

I think for me and MT40, Sarah McLachlan owns the record. She had her first Top 40 (and Top 10) hit with 'Ice Cream' in 1995 and after about 25 more hits and almost 9 years, 'Fallen' became her very first #1 single.

Ludacris wins out, taking seven tries to reach #1. Ironically enough, he hasn't had a song even chart since gaining a #1 hit.
"Area Codes": #4 "Roll Out (My Business)": #2 "Welcome to Atlanta": #6 "Saturday (Ooh! Ooh!)": #4 "Move Bitch": #3 "Act a Fool": #17 "Stand Up!": #1
Coming in second, Michelle Branch took five attempts to reach #1.
"Everywhere": #5 "All You Wanted": #2 "Goodbye to You": #5 "Game of Love": #5 "Are You Happy Now?": #1

It took her 10 songs to hit #1.

mine's probably No Doubt, who had nothing at number one before 'Underneath It All' in 2002.

It's a 5-way tie. Each of them hit #1 on their third try:
Michelle Branch "All You Wanted": #7 "Goodbye to You": #3 "The Game of Love": #1
Beyonce "Work it Out": #16 "Baby Boy": #15 "Me, Myself, and I": #1
Chad Kroeger "Too Bad" (Nickelback): #2 "Hero": #3 "Someday" (Nickelback): #1
Britney Spears "Boys (Co-Ed Remix)": #6 "Me Against the Music": #7 "Toxic": #1
Usher "U Don't Have to Call": #10 "Can U Help Me": #17 "Burn": #1
However...with "Karma" debuting this week, it marks Alicia Keys's 4th chart appearance, after "If I Ain't Got You", "Diary", and "My Boo". If she hits #1 with "Karma", she'll have the record all to herself.
