And, proving nostalgia always wins, Hall & Oates's record for oldest artist to hit #1 has just been broken! 76-year-old Paul McCartney got #1 on my chart this week with "Come On To Me".

Updated to include Cher, who broke both Prince and Madonna's records for me in August with "Fernando", at the age of 72.

Sergio Mendes became the oldest #1 on my chart in late 2017, at 76. This in turn is now broken by Mavis Staples, who is on my first #1 of 2019 at age 79.

Elton John just hit #1 for me - he's 72. And since then, he's had five more #1's, prolonging his #1's into age 74. In the last three years, the following artists, all over the age of 70, have had #1's: Ozzy Osbourne, "Ordinary Man" (with Elton John) - 71 years Tina Turner, "What's Love Got To Do With It" (with Kygo) - 80 years Paul Carrack, "You're Not Alone" - 70 years (was #1 on his 70th birthday!) Jackson Browne, "My Cleveland Heart" - 72 years Carlos Santana, "Move" (with Rob Thomas and American Authors) - 74 years

The oldest first-billed would be Santana, who was 52 when "Smooth" hit #1 in 1999. Leo Sayer was 56 when he was billed as a featured vocalist on his own "Thunder In My Heart Again" by Meck in early 2006. The youngest would be Usher, who was 19 when he hit #1 in 1997 with "You Make Me Wanna..." just before my chart was published regularly on the Net in January 1998. After January 1998, the youngest would be Mitchell Hunter, who was 19 when "They Might Say" got to #1 in late 2004. UPDATE: The oldest performer to reach #1 as a lead act on my chart now are Pet Shop Boys, who were 59 and 54 respectively when "Vocal" got to #1 in 2013 (and became my #1 song of that year!). PSB got to #1 again in 2017 with "Burn", making them 62 and 57 when it reached #1. In 2022, Bettye LaVette got to #1 as a featured vocalist with an interpolation of a song she recorded in 1965 on Odesza's "The Last Goodbye" at age 74. The youngest performer to reach #1 is Tristan Thompson who was 16 when "Tidal Wave" reached the top in 2014. The record for oldest lead performer on a #1 song has now been broken as 70's disco producer Cerrone reached the top recently with "The Only One" at age 70.

Gene was 28 when he recorded it.
