Monitor, question! Is the Hits chart all-format or just CHR/Pop? Cause I'm vastly confused if Britney's "Lucky" actually made top 3 all-format. Also some differences on here I noted: Sarah McLachlan's "Mirrorball" was #1 on RPM but really #2 on Soundscan. Mariah Carey's "Honey" was #1 on RPM Hits chart but #2 on the official airplay chart in the chart book.

Mariah Carey's "Honey" was #1 on RPM Hits chart but #2 on the official airplay chart in the chart book. The RPM Hits chart has had a different methodology over the years. At the time of Lucky, I believe the chart used playlists fom CHR, AC, and Rock reporters as well as retail single sales. I could be wrong though. The chart was never compiled by BDS or any other radio tracking service. With the albums, I believe RPM didn't use SoundScan until after Mirrorball. The Record did however start using SoundScan in 1996. It's The Record's charts, not RPM's, that most in the Canadian music industry regarded as Canada's official charts from the mid 1980's onward.

Thanks for clearing that up, greatly! ;D
Seeing as the official airplay chart started in 1990(from Nanda's Canadian Chart book), is it safe to use RPM's Hits(when it was airplay only[of course, just CHR]) for the late '80s and stuff? Cause I'd like to actually say "Like A Prayer" & "Express Yourself" were both airplay #1's in Canada. ;D

I also believe at the time of Express Yourself and Like A Prayer, the RPM Hits chart was used using a combination of CHR and Rock radio playlists. As I said before, The Record, not RPM, is widely if not overwhelmingly considered the authority on Canadian charts since it's inception in the mid 1980's. Both publications are valid though. Nanda still hasn't returned any of my emails regarding the RPM questions however.

I got a response from Nanda regarding the RPM Hits chart!
Hi Scot,
RPM compiled its RPM 100 Hit Tracks chart from playlists of radio stations regardless of format. It was similar to the CMN National Airplay chart.

Oh that's why! So erm... where did Lucky peak on BDS spins/audience chart to prove that? I don't know. I only have access to BDS info from May 2001 onward. You might want to ask Nanda.

I had put this in the News & Reviews forum a couple of days ago but you got to it first Scot! www.avtrust.ca/rpm/en/RPM was my bible for Canadian charts from the mid 70's to the end of the 80's. After that, no Canadian chart made much sense to me, but all were valuable information. But RPM always had the scoop on what was Canadian first.
