BOSTON MANOR SHOCKINGLY UPSETS PEARL JAM, EARNS FOURTH #1 WITH "CONTAINER"
The Burner 50 has its third new #1 in three weeks, and this week Boston Manor rides a massive wave of instant M4B impact and dominant play for me as "Container" becomes their fourth #1, following "Plasticine Dreams", "Ratking" and "Passenger". Rising from #11 in its third week in the top 50, "Container" also is the second #1 this year and seventh overall to reach the top from outside the top 10; Pile Of Love's "Happy To Hide" started its two-week reign two months ago after rising from #12.
"Container" is building up to play dominance similar to their 2020 breakout hit "Ratking", which decisively was my most played song of June and July 2020 with huge gaps over my second-most played of those months; it ended up spending 10 weeks at #1 and ranked as my top song of that year. Concurrently, "Container" achieved huge instant impact on M4B, becoming their first Globalchart top 40 entry in just its second week and landed a big debut on this Friday's M4B Radio Top 40.
The big move pushes Pearl Jam's "Dark Matter" to #2 after a single week at #1, with the third #1 of the last three weeks, Militarie Gun's "Do It Faster", following behind at #3 - a highly strong and competitive top 3. The top 5 is rounded out by two solid holdovers, Glitterer's "The Same Ordinary" at #4 and Softcult's "Shortest Fuse" at #5.
"Container" is the only new song in the top 10, but several songs are aiming to get in. Noah Kahan's "Homesick", reimagined as a duet with Sam Fender, is up 18-13 and aiming to become Kahan's first and Fender's sixth top 10. Microwave's "Bored Of Being Sad" rises 23-14 in its third chart week, indicating a promising run for the fourth song released from their upcoming fourth album Let's Start Degeneracy and likely to become their first top 10 since the first of those songs, "Circling The Drain", in 2022. Tigercub has the week's highest debut at #43 with "Show Me My Maker"; the proteges of Pearl Jam guitarist Stone Gossard, signed to his label Loosegroove, recently released a remix of the song by Gossard.

PEARL JAM EARNS FIRST EVER BURNER 50 #1 WITH "DARK MATTER"
In just its third week on the chart, Pearl Jam rises 5-1 on this week's Burner 50 with "Dark Matter", the title song from the legendary Seattle rockers' upcoming 12th album. "Dark Matter" has benefited from a mix of strong positive reception, strong play, and a huge instant impact on M4B - it debuted at #5 on the M4B Radio Top 40 and after just two weeks on the Globalchart became the band's best charting entry since 1999's "Last Kiss". It's the band's first ever #1; they previously hit the top 10 with five other songs from 2017 to 2020, topping out at #2 with "Superblood Wolfmoon".
Pearl Jam's big jump to #1 displaces Militarie Gun's "Do It Faster" just a week after its own big jump to the top, but it backs down a spot as a strong #2. Pile Of Love's "Happy To Hide" dips 2-3 after six weeks in the top 2. Glitterer benefits strongly from my positive reception to their third album Rationale as its third single "The Same Ordinary" jumps 13 spots from 17-4 to become the album's third straight top 5 hit, while album highlight "I Want To Be Invisible" earns the week's top debut at #44.
Softcult rounds out the top 5 with "Shortest Fuse" up 8-5 to become their second top 5 as lead artists, following the #2-peaking "Drain". Bruce Dickinson earns his second solo top 10 with "Rain On The Graves" up 11-9, aiming to repeat the success of former 3-week #1 "Afterglow Of Ragnarok". Many Eyes, a melodic post-hardcore band formed by Keith Buckley following the breakup of Every Time I Die, jump 16-10 with their first entry "Future Proof", becoming Buckley's third top 10 following a pair of #4 peakers from ETID's final album Radical, "Post-Boredom" and "Thing With Feathers".

MILITARIE GUN EARNS SECOND #1; HYPER COMPETITIVE POOL LEADS TO BIG RISES, BIG DROPS, 8 DEBUTS
The big story of 2024's new music for the M4B Radio DJs: it's been surprisingly eventful for the first two months of the year. That's made the chart competitive in recent weeks, culminating in this week's big reorganization featuring several big movers/droppers and eight debuts. The big movers include this week's #1, rising from outside the top 5 to become the second #1 for one of the 2020s' most promising up and comers.
Militarie Gun's "Do It Faster" jumps 6-1 on the strength of strong play in its second run, a run aided by its release to alternative radio (it just made the top 50 last week). "Do It Faster" was widely praised as one of 2023's best rock songs, but initially bombed from too many singles being released at once; followups "Very High" (#10) and "Will Logic" (#6) fared better last year, but the second run for "Faster" now gives the band their second Burner 50 #1, following 2022's "Let Me Be Normal".
The rise for Militarie Gun ends the run of a top 4 that held solidly for four weeks, including the last three weeks in the same exact order. Pile Of Love's former #1 "Happy To Hide" is the only one to stay where it was last week, holding #2 for a fourth consecutive week. Bruce Dickinson's "Afterglow Of Ragnarok", the #1 song of the last three weeks, backs down two spots to #3. NewDad drops one from their #3 peak with "Nightmares", while the Foo Fighters' "The Glass" dips 4-6 - its first week outside the top 5 since its debut week - despite landing the band's second M4B Radio Top 40 #1 just last week.
Three new songs enter this week's top 10, led by a double-digit mover, Pearl Jam's "Dark Matter" which bolts 25-5 in its second week. The title track from the band's upcoming 12th studio album builds on instant impact upon its release last week, with the song debuting at #5 on the M4B Radio Top 40. It's Pearl Jam's fifth Burner 50 top 10 and third to reach the top 5, following "Superblood Wolfmoon" (#2) and "Quick Escape" (#4) from their previous album Gigaton.
Softcult earns their fifth top 10 hit (fourth as lead artists) with "Shortest Fuse" up 15-8, and first since their feature on Teenage Wrist's #1 "Still Love". And Suki Waterhouse jumps 19-10 with "OMG" fresh off of rapid gains on the M4B 40. Other songs to watch in the coming weeks include "Future Proof" by Many Eyes, Keith Buckley's post-Every Time I Die band, up 21-16, and shoegaze-inflected indie band Hotline TNT's "Stump" up 38-19.
Boston Manor has the week's top debut with "Container" at #22. It's the UK band's first new release since their 2022 album Datura, which spawned their most recent #1 "Passenger".

BRUCE DICKINSON REMAINS #1 TO LEAD STATIC TOP 4; BUZZY NEW ROCK BAND MAKES IMPACT
A week after rising to the top from a 3-week run in the #2 spot, Bruce Dickinson once again leads the Burner 50 with "Afterglow Of Ragnarok", remaining #1 for a second week. The song continues to hold strongly in a mostly static top 10, fending off competition from other strong holdovers with former #1 "Happy To Hide" by Pile Of Love at #2, "Nightmares" by NewDad at #3, and former #1/current M4B 40 #1 contender "The Glass" by the Foo Fighters at #4. Real Estate rounds out the top 5 with "Water Underground" rising to a new peak of #5 a week after breaking the top 10.
The ascendant Michigan-based rock band Liquid Mike, who play a strain of emo-inflected indie rock and power pop, gets a huge boost on this week's chart with the release of and my positive reception to their album Paul Bunyan's Slingshot, coinciding with much critical praise for the album and especially its earworm of a lead single "Mouse Trap", which peaked here at #3. The album's Coldplay-referencing second chart entry "K2" becomes the band's second top 10 with an 16-8 lift, "Mouse Trap" rebounds 17-12, and album highlight "Drinking And Driving" debuts at #42.
Another buzzy artist, the Vermont folk-pop singer-songwriter Noah Kahan, lands his first ever Burner 50 hit and the week's top debut at #41 with a new version of his song "Homesick" recorded as a duet with British singer Sam Fender. Kahan's star has been rising in recent months thanks to the title track from his breakthrough album "Stick Season" and reinterpretations of his songs in collaboration with artists like Post Malone, Hozier and Zach Bryan, with the version of "Homesick" featuring Fender the latest of them. While this marks Kahan's first Burner 50 entry, it's Fender's 11th, including a string of top 10 hits from 2019 to 2021: "Hypersonic Missiles", "Will We Talk?" (both #9), "Hold Out", "Seventeen Going Under" (both #4) and "Aye" (#10).

IRON MAIDEN FRONTMAN TOPS CHART WITH SOLO ENTRY AFTER 3 WEEKS AT #2
Bruce Dickinson, singer of Iron Maiden, tops the Burner 50 after three weeks of nearly missing in the runner up spot as “Afterglow Of Ragnarok” climbs to #1 to become his first chart leader with or without the band that made him famous. “Ragnarok” benefited from consistent strong play in the last month, success as an M4B crossover hit (it reached #1 a week after hitting the same peak on Jessica's Top 40) and news of an upcoming Book Club episode themed around Dickinson’s solo work. Adding to Dickinson's big week on the chart, the followup single "Rain On The Graves" is the week's top debut at #34.
“Ragnarok” - its title inspired by a Norse mythological concept for the end of the world - is the lead track from Dickinson’s first solo album in 19 years, The Mandrake Project, centered on the story of a man involved in a project to take the human soul at the point of death and place it in something else. Even before the song topped the chart, it outpeaked Maiden's highest appearances, “Speed Of Light” (#6) and “The Writing On The Wall” (#7).
"Afterglow Of Ragnarok" also breaks a record that numerous songs have tried and failed to break in the last five years: the chart's longest #1 song, clocking in at five minutes and 45 seconds. The previous record holder, 2019's "Antitype" by the Intersphere, is five minutes and 28 seconds. Since then, several top 5 songs have tried and failed to beat the record: Fireworks' "Demitasse" (#4, 6:34), the Night Flight Orchestra's "Transmissions" (#2, 5:44), Rina Sawayama's "Enter Sandman" (#5, 5:33), My Chemical Romance's "The Foundations Of Decay" (#4, 6:00), Greg Puciato's "Never Wanted That" (#2, 5:29), Ozzy Osbourne's "Patient No. 9" (#3, 7:21) and Metallica's "Master Of Puppets" (#5, 8:35).
Pile Of Love drop to #2 after two weeks in the lead with "Happy To Hide", but they still remain in contention; NewDad holds the #3 spot for a second week with "Nightmares", the Foo Fighters' former #1 "The Glass" continues hanging on in the top 5 at #4, and Duff McKagan re-enters the top 5 with former #1 "I Just Don't Know" rebounding 6-5. As expected, Real Estate's "Water Underground" (11-7) and the Lemon Twigs' "My Golden Years" (15-10) enter the top 10 following strong Check 'Em Out hype.

CHECK 'EM OUT SONGS DOMINATE CHART: PILE OF LOVE REMAIN #1; NEWDAD, REAL ESTATE, LEMON TWIGS MAKE MOVES
For yet another week, the influence of M4B Charts Central's new Check 'Em Out forum is the big story of the Burner 50; the top 3 songs were all posted to it, two of the three new top 10 entries were as well, two of its biggest breakout songs are edging closer to the upper end of the survey, and several songs from the forum make up this week's debuts.
Pile Of Love, a week after an unexpected 12-1 jump, hold the #1 spot for a second week with "Happy To Hide", one of five songs to date I posted to the forum. Its lead comes almost entirely from strong play with me, as it so far hasn't crossed over to any other charts (though it's currently on Jessica's bubbling under and was added to QCIndie). Bruce Dickinson's solo song "Afterglow Of Ragnarok", posted by Jessica in the forum, gets a third week at #2, while NewDad jump 13-3 with another of the five songs I posted, "Nightmares".
Elsewhere in the top 10, the Foo Fighters' former #1 "The Glass" holds at #4 fresh off becoming a top 5 Globalchart hit, Death Lens' pensive, dramatic "Limousine" inches up 6-5, Mannequin Pussy land their fourth top 10 with "Sometimes" up 11-8, and Wisp's "Your Face" follows with a 12-9 move.
Two breakout songs from Check 'Em Out are on their way to the top 10. Real Estate's "Water Underground" jumps 17-11; the indie band has been releasing music since 2009 but haven't taken off on M4B until this song, which evokes the 90s indie that soundtracked the classic Nickelodeon show The Adventures Of Pete & Pete and whose music video features that show's stars Michael Maronna and Danny Tamberelli. And the Lemon Twigs' "My Golden Years" continues its fast climb with an 18-15 jump in its third week; it's the Long Island duo's second top 15 hit and could likely outperform 2020's "The One" as their best peak to date.
Six songs debut this week, most of which come from Check 'Em Out songs. Present's "Easy" leads the batch at #23, a discovery on Spotify's Adrenaline playlist that I posted to Check 'Em Out and had previously been a hit for Lyhom. Suki Waterhouse, the actress-singer famous for Daisy Jones & The Six and dating Robert Pattinson, lands her first entry at #31 with the title track from her upcoming album "OMG"; it's a likely breakout as the song received high praise among M4B members in replies to its thread. After three of their songs appeared in the Next in Line list without charting, indie band Sir Chloe finally cracks the top 50 with "Seventeen" at #34.
And Militarie Gun's "Do It Faster", one of 2023's most acclaimed rock songs, re-enters the chart at #32 after the song was promoted to alternative radio. While Militarie Gun had a big year on the Burner 50 with their Life Under The Gun era, "Do It Faster" only reached #23 in its first run, brickwalling when the second single "Very High" (which hit #10) was released.

PUNK/EMO SUPERGROUP PULL SHOCKING UPSET, EARN CHART'S SIXTH #1 CLIMB FROM OUTSIDE TOP 10
On the strength of strong play since the start of January and its inclusion in M4B's recently launched Check 'Em Out forum, Pile Of Love, a supergroup whose members come from various punk, pop punk and emo bands but play 90s-influenced power pop/jangle pop, unexpectedly land the Burner 50's new #1 with "Happy To Hide". It advances from #12 to become the second new #1 of 2024, the band's first and the sixth song in chart history to reach #1 from outside the top 10; the others to do so were "Aquasun" by Basement (16-1, 2016), "The Workers Are Few" by '68 (11-1, 2017), "Dweeb" by Teenage Wrist (11-1, 2018), "Holiday" by Turnstile (13-1, 2021) and Loathe and Teenage Wrist's "Is It Really You?" (16-1, 2022). (It's worth mentioning that four of the previous five ranked top 10 in their respective release years' year end charts, and "Aquasun", "Dweeb" and "Holiday" are among my favorite songs of all time, so "Happy To Hide" is in elite company.)
Pile Of Love, who have released music since 2021, features the drummer and guitarist of post-hardcore band Drug Church (who also hit #1 two years ago with "Million Miles Of Fun") and the bassists of The Story So Far and State Champs. Nothing from their 2021 debut album charted, but their 2022 EP Flake On The Future had a #18 hit with "Over & Out". "Happy To Hide" comes from the recently released EP Super Sometimes.
Elsewhere on the chart, Bruce Dickinson holds on to #2 for a second week with "Afterglow Of Ragnarok", Duff McKagan slips 1-3 with "I Just Don't Know" after a single week at #1, the Foo Fighters' former #1 "The Glass" drops 3-4, and Glitterer gets a 9-5 lift with "Just A Place". No new songs enter this week's top 10, though strong play could propel Mannequin Pussy's "Sometimes" (14-11), Wisp's "Your Face" (20-12) and NewDad's "Nightmares" (21-13) up there as soon as next week. Hardcore band Gouge Away have the week's only debut at #43 with "Stuck In A Dream".

DUFF MCKAGAN/JERRY CANTRELL COLLAB BECOMES FIRST NEW #1 OF 2024, JERRY'S FOURTH
After three weeks in the #2 position behind Foo Fighters, Guns N' Roses bassist Duff McKagan's solo song "I Just Don't Know", an acoustic rock ballad featuring guitar and backing vocals from Alice In Chains' Jerry Cantrell, climbs up to #1 on the Burner 50 to become 2024's first new #1. Released as a single from McKagan's solo album Lighthouse, "I Just Don't Know" found significant M4B success since its release as Cantrell's first new music since the massive success of his solo album Brighten (which also featured McKagan). The song is Cantrell's fourth #1 on the chart, following the Brighten songs "Atone", "Nobody Breaks You" and "Had To Know".
Challenging for the top is yet another solo member of an esteemed hard rock institution. Iron Maiden singer Bruce Dickinson charges 7-2 with "Afterglow Of Ragnarok", benefiting from both solid play counts in recent weeks and weak competition to become his best peaking song with or without Iron Maiden; his band reached #6 in 2015 with "Speed Of Light" and #7 in 2021 with "The Writing On The Wall". "Ragnarok" will appear on The Mandrake Project, Dickinson's first solo album in nearly 20 years.
Elsewhere, the Foo Fighters' five-week leader "The Glass" drops to #3, Liquid Mike's #3-peaking "Mouse Trap" backs down a spot to #4, and major M4B word of mouth hit "We've Got Places" by Your Future Ghost, the duo of One Tree Hill stars and musicians Kate Voegele and Michael Grubbs, hits a new peak of #5 fresh off a victory in last week's episode of 20Hitz. LA punk band Death Lens enters the top 10 with "Limousine", up 11-10.
M4B's new Check 'Em Out forum has an effect on this week's chart as three songs I posted to the forum all rise strongly and one of its breakout songs has top debut honors. Emo supergroup Pile Of Love's "Happy To Hide" jumps 31-12 and appears likely to make next week's top 10, TikTok-famous shoegaze song "Your Face" by Wisp gets a 24-20 lift, and Irish alt-rockers NewDad edge closer to the top 20 with "Nightmares" up 28-21. The Lemon Twigs have the top debut with "My Golden Years" at #42; it's the Long Island power pop group's fourth song to chart.

FOO FIGHTERS HOLD #1 FOR 5TH WEEK, BIG PURGE IN TOP 10
Benefiting from a slow period for new music and getting the But Here We Are album on vinyl for Christmas, the Foo Fighters extend their lead on the Burner 50 to a fifth week with “The Glass”. The song now ties “Run” and “Rescued” for their longest reign, and one more week on top would get it to a sole lead.
The top 5 is mostly stagnant, as Duff McKagan and Jerry Cantrell's “I Just Don't Know” holds at #2 for a third week, Liquid Mike inches up to a new #3 peak with “Mouse Trap”, Heavenward trades spots with “Wish” down 3-4, and Glitterer stays at #5 with “Plastic”.
However, a purge in the top 10 brings four new songs into the mix including a #1 contender. Iron Maiden frontman Bruce Dickinson's “Afterglow Of Ragnarok”, his first solo single in 19 years, jumps 11-7 and is one to watch in the coming weeks as one of few current songs getting strong play from me at the moment. Rush singer Geddy Lee gets an 18-8 boost with “Gone”, a recently released demo from his lone solo album, 2000's My Favorite Headache. Mitski earns her first top 10 with “My Love Mine All Mine”, an unlikely viral Tiktok hit with a country tinged dream pop song that reminds me of “Fade Into You” by Mazzy Star; it moves 12-9 after a two-month climb. And Glitterer jumps 17-10 with “Just A Place”, becoming Ned Russin's post-Title Fight band's fourth top 10 and making their upcoming third album Rationale their first to have multiple top 10s.
90s indie rock veteran J. Robbins (ex-Jawbox and Burning Airlines) has the week's top debut at #42 with "Exquisite Corpse", the first single from his upcoming solo album Basilisk. It's Robbins' first entry in more than four years, last appearing with "Soldier On" (#15) and "Un-becoming" (#25) in 2019.
