GIRLS JUST WANT TO HAVE FUN – September 9, 2012
If you're lost, you can look and you will find fun. at #1 time after time.
“Some Nights” has been at the top for more than just a few nights. In fact, it's now spending its eighth week at #1, becoming the longest running #1 of the year. The last song to spend eight weeks (or more) at #1 was Lady Antebellum's “Need You Now”, which spent eleven weeks at the top between January and March 2010. It's quite the achievement, especially for a band that only made their chart debut this year. Look for their rumored next single, “Carry On”, to hit the top 40 soon.
Holding is place is not as good enough as the Goonies because this batch of Tuneies (or tunes) are still bulleted. Train is at #2 for a fourth week with “50 Ways To Say Goodbye”, while Owl City/Carly Rae Jepsen hold at #3 for a fourth week with “Good Time”. Rounding out the top 5 are Chris Wallace, #4 for a third week with “Remember When (Push Rewind)” and “Blow Me (One Last Kiss)”, up one to #5 for Pink.
Up from 11-8 is Taylor Swift's “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together”. Swift has already hit #1 on the Hot 100 with the song. Also climbing into the top ten is the third hit from Andy Grammer, “Miss Me”. It rises 12-10. The video just premiered over the weekend. In three words: glow stick liberation. I guess you'll just have to find out what that means when you watch it. I personally think it's his best clip this era.
If you're waiting for a change of chart, well, there's not much movement in the top twenty this week, though Walk The Moon's 24-20 rise with “Anna Sun” could give them a top ten entry in a few weeks. Several songs stall just outside it this week, like “Oh Love” by Green Day (22-22) and “Windows Down” by Big Time Rush (21-21). Guess they won't be driving all night.
This week's Biggest Mover belongs to OneRepublic, who rise from 33-25 with “Feel Again”. If you're a chart buff like me, our random fact of the week is that there have only been three other national top 40 hits on the Hot 100 in history to include both “feel” (or some variation) and “again” in the title. In 1976, two of them charted: “I've Got A Feeling (We'll Be Seeing Each Other Again” by soul singer Al Wilson (#29) and “Tryin' To Get The Feeling Again” by the guy who wrote the songs, Barry Manilow (#10). However, my favorite of the three reached the top 40 a decade later: 1986's “Feel It Again” by Canada's Honeymoon Suite (#34). It's probably one of the best songs Foreigner never recorded. OneRepublic's new one sounds nothing like those three, but I can only imagine a crazy collaboration going down at the Copacabana over this one.
Four songs enter the top 40 this week. Grace Potter & The Nocturnals enter the chart for their first time as “Stars” debuts at #37. They've missed the 40 a few times in the past few years with songs like “Ah Mary” and “Paris (Ooh La La)”. No other Potters have made my chart before, but “Mrs. Potter's Library” by the Counting Crows sneaked in in the spring of 2000.
The trio known as Swedish House Mafia just missed the chart last year with “Save The World”. They don't need puppies for this one as “Don't You Worry Child” roars in like a lion at #38. The vocalist on the song is John Martin, a Swedish session singer, who also provided the uncredited vocals on “Save The World”.
Coming off of her #1 song at CHR radio, “Lights” (which got to #9 on my chart last year), Ellie Goulding scores her second entry, “Anything Could Happen”, at #39. Back in 2005, Duran Duran spent six weeks at #1 on my chart with their song “What Happens Tomorrow”. The song is really happening, but what happens happens with this one. It looks positive, though.
Finally, the duo of Megan & Liz score their first hit with “Bad For Me”, debuting at #40. Their anti-bullying anthem, “Are You Happy Now?”, made my New & Active for a few weeks earlier this year.
Next week, look for Neon Trees and possibly Ryan Beatty to debut. Adam Lambert's new one is also looking probable for a few weeks from now. Other new songs In The Mix this week come from fun, Marina & The Diamonds and The Wanted.
You kept with me forward all through the chart commentary, and now, let's flash it back.
