Hello everybody, I am a copycat and decided to follow Jess' idea and ask for suggestions Imagine you hate The Killers and in your thread, I suggest "Listen to The Killers, you'll love them", and it'd be weird for you to flat out telling me "Sorry, I don't like them". So, with that idea in mind, feel free to recommend artists you think I would love. A few things. I am open to listen to most music I don't know, but I tend to lean towards preferring male singers. None of you are mexican, but just in case, please don't recommend any traditional mexican music, as I don't like it. If you're going to suggest soul, r&b or hip hop, please try to suggest people like Missy Elliott, J. Cole or anyone that to me, sound more unique and creative than your average Ashanti or Kendrick Lamar (yeah, people love him... don't know why). If you're to suggest pop, please avoid the top singers we all know that routinely keep churning out radio hits. If you're going for country, you might have a hard time lol I tend to prefer extremes. Either very poppy country or very traditional. Bro country doesn't cut it for me... unless it's by some hottie jajajajaja! Nice to watch a pretty face while I suffer through run of the mill music XD If you're going rock/alternative, please try to avoid really high pitched singers. It makes me feel weird listening to some guy screaming in almost female voices lol If it's hard rock or metal, I tend to prefer the more melodic kind. However, I don't like symphonic metal, too dramatic for me. Feel free to suggest any artist that makes ambient or preferably dark ambient, any avant garde artist, anything that sounds evil, which does not mean screaming men, cause that doesn't scare anyone, it's just annoying. Instead go for something like... yes, Perfume Genius' "I'm a Mother" kind of music lol About folk, I wouldn't know how to describe what I like. But there are some people like Roddy Woomble, the singer from Idlewild, that make really sleep-inducing folk music, with no hooks and no changes, so something like him is a no. I'd rather something like Jeffrey Foucault, who sometimes makes straight up folk, but sometimes spices it up with other influences. No EDM music please. If you want to recommend asian music, go for idol female japanese music (no males from Japan), or if it's chinese, any male singer will do, as long as it's ballads <3 Luckily most singers there sing ballads lol If it's thai, I will require you to please provide romanized versions of the tracklist and artist name No world music. If it's something from the Balkans area, please no female turbofolk. Unless you find it really boundary pushing, please, no latin american music. Any music not in english, is always more eagerly awaited. Kpop is also welcomed, but a friend already feeds me enough, so chances are I know most male groups. Female groups are welcome, but in small doses. Anything you think sounds weird or really weird is also awaited. Jazz and blues are welcome as long as they're offered with fusion music. I don't like the genres enough to listen to full albums of pure jazz or blues. Classical music is welcomed only if it's modern, meaning, neoclassical and music from the last 50 years or so. I love anything sad or depressing as well. Ballads are preferred over upbeat by the way. Uff, if you managed to read all that voluntarily, I thank you so much! Let's minimize the chances of me rejecting what you offer lol And I hope some of you are not put off by that wall of text and hopefully you will suggest something <3

Solange - "Cranes In The Sky" A very pretty ballad with Aaliyah-like vocals. To me this is WAY better than anything her sister has done in recent years. Garbage - "Magnetized" Third single from their latest album, Strange Little Birds, although I feel like you might like the other two singles more, which I will also post below. Lady Gaga - "Million Reasons" You might've heard this one already but I'm not sure, but it's basically Gaga doing a country ballad. Crying - "Wool In The Wash" I have no idea how to describe this one. It was recommended to me by Unkie whose had this at #1 on his chart for like 800 weeks. It's very different but not in a pretentious way. Justin Timberlake & Anna Kendrick - "True Colors" You've made no secret that you like to listen to good lucking guys. I have no idea how you feel about Justin but I always thought he was cute. Very nice cover of the 1986 Cyndi Lauper hit. Blind Pilot - "Packed Powder" Sounds like a late 90's alt hit. That's it from my chart, but also, #shamelessplug, there are two shows on M4B Radio that I'd recommend you check out for undiscovered music. - The Book Club, hosted by me, is a music discovery show where I pick an artist, album, genre, or year to check out and then at the end reach a "final verdict" and decide whether or not they're a core artist. I have spotlighted everything from Harry Chapin to The Offspring to funk music to, unfortunately, Glory by Britney Spears. It's an hour long and airs at 7PM EST on Sundays. - The Music Detective, hosted by Unkie, is also a music discovery show. Mike picks songs from below the Globalchart that only ONE person is charting. He created the show to help people struggling to find new music to add to their charts. That one is either 1 or 2 hours and airs Thursdays at 8PM EST.

LOL @ the suggestion Kendrick Lamar isn't creative. He's not everyone's cup of tea but the detail put into his lyrics, my favs could never and neither could yours. Other than that, you've set WAY too many restrictions for anyone to be able to reasonably suggest something that you haven't already opposed. But I can try with a few of my favourites of the last while and all are sad songs:

Also, my ex loves Jeffrey Foucault and has met him or played with him a few times before so perhaps I can suggest others like him like Chris Smither or Richard Shindell?

Jess! Let's start with Solange. Wow, I loved the song much more than I thought I would. I almost dismissed it, but I'm glad I didn't. Some of her moves remind me of PJ Harvey for some reason. The only thing I'd change about it, is the layered vocals towards the end, as I think keeping only her vocals was more than enough. The Garbage songs, I hated Empty lol But the other two are better. Particularly Even Though Our Love Is Doomed. Soft and with those little parts where the sound gets a bit fuller. Nice song, can't believe it was a single! The Gaga song, I was also avoiding, because I'm awful and from time to time, I decide to hate on some random artist (lol!) but Million Reasons is beautiful! And more country than a lot of songs charting in country radio The Justin song and the Crying songs were not my thing. While the Blind Pilot was nice. Not sure if enough to seek listening to it up, but it was fine. The ideas for your shows are brilliant! I might check one of them or both later. Imagine the chances of my tuning in when Mike decides to focus on an artist I like lol That'd rock! Mike, yes I am aware of Kendrick's reputation, but to me, this is like The Beatles. Everyone loves them and careful if you disagree, cause then your music taste is garbage. I really don't see Kendrick as an interesting artist. And if the main reason to make me think he is good, is his lyrics, then I'm at a loss. Lyrics are the least important thing to me in music. So if he's being a true poet, I will miss it every time and focus on the music or vocals. I prefer J. Cole or Drake, that to me, make the genre different, pushing boundaries, something that I don't think Kendrick does. But who cares, due to my tastes, everyone would support that Kendrick is amazing. About the restrictions. I imposed restrictions on genres, and usually they were one or two for said genre. For example, pop is fine as long as it's not by a hitmaker. Simple restriction. I think most genres I suggested have one rule only, which, if counted in tandem with them all, sure, it makes it seem like I will reject most things, but the simple fact that I bothered to include them, is to show I will listen to a wide variety and not restrict you from posting about your faves cause I dismissed the whole genre. But based on the replies, you are right, people got scared about the restrictions, so still, thanks for bothering to suggest something. Now, don't think my opinions of the music you provided, make you think I am retaliating or something ok? The Lissie song was calm and nice, but I couldn't stand her voice. Maybe this is one of those songs that when another artist covers it, I like it more. Buuuut oh my! I was aware of Sarah Slean's existence, but never bothered to listen to her. This song is gorgeous! *ready to hunt for her music* The video says it's from 2008. Does she has better releases that are more recent? (albums, not singles). Lori also has a great song! I am not sure if this is a good comparison, but the music reminded me of early Sarah McLachlan... but better, no one likes the early Sarah albums lol Jess! I was rick rolled That's awesome! Meeting Jeffrey might be a life goal for me lol I will try to look into those other artists you suggested, thanks!

Cole or Drake, that to me, make the genre different, pushing boundaries, something that I don't think Kendrick does. But who cares, due to my tastes, everyone would support that Kendrick is amazing. That's certainly fair. I think the thing I'd disagree with you about is that you do admit lyrics are the least important thing for you with music and since Kendrick's strengths are with his lyrics, it's not that you can say he's not interesting, he just doesn't interest you. So when you say you don't know why people like him, that's silly. You know why they like him. You just don't place the same value in what makes him well-liked, and there's nothing wrong with that. Using the Beatles example, they also don't interest me but I can still acknowledge their role in popular music. I know people like and respect them but beyond that I personally don't really care. It probably all comes down to semantics anyway. Now, don't think my opinions of the music you provided, make you think I am retaliating or something ok? The Lissie song was calm and nice, but I couldn't stand her voice. Maybe this is one of those songs that when another artist covers it, I like it more. Buuuut oh my! I am not sure if this is a good comparison, but the music reminded me of early Sarah McLachlan... but better, no one likes the early Sarah albums lol Sarah Slean's first album came out in 1998 or so. She has a new one coming out in March next year. Her last record was from 2012 called Land & Sea. It was a double album where one was more pop and the other was more classical-inspired. I love both for different reasons but admittedly, it's my least favourite of her albums so far. The album Get Home (that you listened to) is from is one of my favourites but is very sombre. I'd say my favourite album of hers was 2004's Day One. She has an interesting style and references a lot of writers and literature and art in her work. She's usually very whimsical. I'm glad you like her. She's one of my favourites. The Lori song I picked because it does almost bring me to tears nearly every time I listen to it. It's about that moment when you're finally ready to face the world after the passing of someone really close to you. I suppose it can refer to any major life event that causes you to mourn but I think it's such a well-written song. Though had I known you don't prioritize lyrics, I probably wouldn't have picked it. Lori is a country artist. She's most known for writing Girl Crush and is a contender for Song of the Year this year as well but her own songs are largely unknown. She released an album this year called The Bird & The Rifle and it's one of my favourites. Maybe check out Wreck You from that. It was a #1 for me earlier this year.

@xfer What do you think of this one? It's from 1991, but it's probably the closest thing to death I have in my library.

Um, not trying to be all cool and edgy or mysterious, but that song was actually kinda cute lol There were parts that were promising. dark and interesting, but they were followed by that happy singing. One thing to point, is that you should remember that I do not pay attention to lyrics (and have a hard time trying to make out when english is spoken) so if that was what made you suggest this to me, then it flew over my head, sorry!
It's not a bad song by any means, but it's not my cup of tea. Thanks for stopping by!! โฅ
