Howdy! I know there are all types of individuals on this website. Some of y'all just want to listen to music. Others of you are audiophiles. And some of us are most interested in social perspectives of music as an industry. We care about how the industry functions as a business entity, how to make music others appreciate, and perhaps even how to sell our own musical products (not me anymore). If you do happen to be interested in learning more about the depth of music as an industry then there is a free course available via Course Era. I am enrolled - it looks fun and I get a certificate from the University of West Virginia upon completion of the course! Yes, you would be an official graduate of West Virginia and can place it on your resume for ever (although only a certificate, not a BSc or BA). By the way, it is intended as a beginner's course so please don't let my phrasing and interests scare you off. Here is a link to the course: www.coursera.org/course/gpsmusicIt would be cool to see some of y'all enrolled in the course with me! Maybe we can help each other out on homework and such!

This would be interesting! lol. And there's no required books to purchase! Is it actually completely free? And do you do it on your own time? (as in, are the lectures live or can one do them whenever they're able to evening/morning/night as long as they get done before a due date?)

It is truly free! No books or anything. And yes, you do all of the work on your own time. I have only taken one other course on Course Era, so I'm not sure if all courses work the same, but assignments were due Sunday night for the other course. You can do the work, watch the lectures, etc. whenever you want. So long as the material was completed by Sunday night it was all good!
And if you make it through week #1 and think it sucks, then just stop. No ramifications for quitting. Won't stay on your transcripts for ever or anything like that.

What can I earn for completing this course? You can earn a Verified Certificate by verifying your work with a risk-free, no obligation Signature Track trial. Payment for Signature Track can be made anytime until the week before the course ends — so you’ll be more certain that you’ll earn your Verified Certificate.
So if I don't pay that, I won't get the certificate?

What can I earn for completing this course? So if I don't pay that, I won't get the certificate? My understanding is that you get the certificate whether you pay or not. You also get the knowledge, which is of course the most important thing. If you pay you get a "verified certificate," which I don't think matters at all. I am enrolled because I want the knowledge, which is free.
