Reading the rankings of the Top 20 Worst Pop Bands of All-Time got me thinking about some of the all-time greats. Although I love LFO, Jackson 5, and NKOTB I do understand why it comes down to Backstreet Boys or N'Sync for GOAT. This article summarizes it best: postgradproblems.com/one-man-settles-the-nsync-versus-backstreet-boys-debate-once-and-for-all/To begin with, the Backstreet Boys outsold N'Sync 2:1. It wasn't even close. But this quote/paragraph lays my claim better than I ever could: "...Backstreet Boys are the superior boy band. Album sales reflect that, the strength of the group reflects that, and the quality and volume of their hit songs reflect that. *NSYNC is nothing more than Justin Timberlake’s backup act...When the overhyped “*NSYNC reunion” at the VMAs last year turned out to be little more than the members of the band dancing behind JT, that sealed *NSYNC’s place in history. Backstreet’s Back? More like Backstreet never left, motherF*ckers." Anyone care to digress?

My personal preference is NSync. There's no real way aside from sales (which can still be iffy; do you go total numbers which can vary because of more or less albums released or do you average per album?) to quantify who might be the greatest of all time, so it mostly just comes down to personal opinion. I wouldn't disagree with any of the points raised in that article (except that Girlfriend, and even I Want You Back would be songs that would make people go off before Pop would!), although I still end up on the side of Timberlake and his posse.
Neither group is one I've ever actually listened to a full album of. I've just heard the singles, and a few other tracks here and there. But if I were to list together all the songs I've heard from both groups and then rank them, I'm pretty sure the top five are all NSync songs. Backstreet Boys have a lot of very good songs, but I struggle to pick a standout or have a favourite personally. And while NSync don't have as many good songs as BSB, they have some songs I absolutely love and doing that will get me to forgive you for a lot.
So yeah, I can see why BSB would generally be considered above NSync, and they probably should be, but my personal preference goes the other way.

My opinion now is no different from 15 years ago - I love both but prefer Backstreet Boys. Still one of my all-time favorite groups.

I feel about my preference here sort of like Bluezombie does...personal opinion. And there's not even one or two things I can point to and say, "Aha! Look at this! This is why I feel the way I feel!" I've always preferred Backstreet Boys to 'N Sync. Although, as many of you who know my taste in music already know, I'm a big fan of Justin Timberlake's solo work. I can't say why I liked Backstreet better than 'N Sync. Their songs weren't all that different. It all comes down to personal opinion. At the end of their career, I did like "Gone" and "Girlfriend." I can also look back and have an appreciation for some of their other songs. But when they first debuted, I always thought of them as a Backstreet knock-off...even more so than all of the other boy bands that were out at the time. One last note: I get that he was a greedy bastard who had dollar signs in his eyes when he did it. But, I always thought it was incredibly douchey of Lou Pearlman to essentially create Backstreet Boys' rival when he formed 'N Sync. Your rival should come from another record label or another producer, not the same person who created you.

The stats do say Backstreet Boys but my preference was always for *N Sync, especially their 2001 songs.

I've always preferred Backstreet Boys. "Show Me The Meaning of Being Lonely", "Quit Playing Games With My Heart", "As Long As You Love Me", "Everybody (Backstreet's Back" and many other of their early hits are excellent.

hmmm...I'll go against the grain. I preferred N'Sync. BSB had some good songs but there was something about them that never endeared them to me. I think it came down to their members. I am just meh with them.
In fact 98 Degrees > BSB

BSB, by far. At first I thought it was N Sync, but then came songs like Gone and Girlfriend which disappointed for me, that told me....you know, BSB is the superior group.

I liked both, but I would have to say overall I prefer the Backstreet Boys, though I do like "Bye Bye Bye" more than any Backstreet Boys song.
I feel like Justin solo has definitely eclipsed 'N Sync, and that the other four guys are largely forgotten, sadly.

Backstreet Boys all the way. They put out some great stuff at their peak, even if it isn't stuff I want to hear all too often. I for one really liked their transition into the pop-rock sound..."Incomplete" and "Inconsolable" are both awesome to be, with the latter being a huge #1 on my personal chart way back in 2007.
I never understood the appeal of the other boy band. From their music to their style, I just never had any appreciation for it no matter how popular it was. I guess you could say that I just don't "get" N'Sync.

I'd go with Backstreet Boys, then 98 Degrees, then N Sync. Did any of you watch the Backstreet Boys doc, "Show 'Em What You're Made Of"? I saw it on Netflix recently and thought it was pretty good.
I guess the main factor for me is how many of each group's songs I liked. For Backstreet, I can think of at least a half-dozen songs I truly enjoyed. For 98 Degrees, "Invisible Man," "The Hardest Thing" and "Because of You" stand out. But of N Sync's list, only "God Must Have Spent a Little More Time on You" is a song I'd make an effort to listen to. (I wouldn't turn off "This I Promise You.")

But if I compare entire catalogs, then I need to take N'Sync. I like LFO more than even the Backstreet Boys though. Rich Cronin was the man! Even his solo album was amazing to me. For those who care...here're my Top 10 '90s Boy Bands!: 1. LFO 2. Backstreet Boys 3. N'Sync 4. BBMak 5. 98 Degrees 6. O-Town 7. Color Me Badd 8. Immature 9. Soul Decision 10. Five No Mercy and Take That BARELY missed out on this list...
