Udo Jürgens, Austria's first winner of the Eurovision Song Contest, died this afternoon on heart failure in the Switzerland as his management announced. Udo Jürgens started his career in 1950 when he won a composer contest organized by Austria's public broadcasting channel ORF. In 1960 he wrote Shirley Bassey's 1961's UK #1 hit "Reach for the stars". In the following years (1964, 1965 and 1966) he participated for three times in the Eurovision Song Contest. His first song "Warum nur warum" had been covered by British contestant Matt Monroe who reached with his version "Walk away" in 1964 #4 in the UK and #23 in the US. Finally in 1966 he won the contest with "Mercie Cherie". "Mercie Cherie" was later covered by Vince Hill. His English version reached #36 in the UK. Udo Jürgens version itself sold over a million copies. In the following years he wrote his popular songs "Griechischer Wein" ("Greek wine"), "Aber bitte mit Sahne" ("But please with cream") or "Mit 66 Jahren" ("With 66 years"). In the recent weeks he started his tour "Mitten im Leben" ("In the midst of life") to promote his 42nd album "Mitten im Leben".
