There have been several platinum 2014 albums in Canada, even before Taylor Swift. Well, it is much easier to go platinum in Canada. We have a population of 35,344,962 and platinum only requires 80,000 sales (1 in 441 people need to buy it). In the US they have a population of 319,060,000 and platinum requires 1,000,000 sales (1 in 319 people need to buy it) Even if they go by shipments instead of sales, it's still way easier in Canada because of business logic...much fewer sales per capita are required. They have about 9x the population but need to sell about 12x as many albums.

Canada recently adjusted its requirement for Gold and Platinum though. Well, in 2008. Though even with the old system, it would have been 1 in 353 people, but album sales in Canada are apparently lower than the US, plus when you take into account how most music marketing is American-centric and all that. But yeah, the levels are different which is enough to explain. I don't know if either of the Platinum albums in Canada are passed 100K or not though.
