It's time to recap the year in music or better my year in music. In 2013 I charted 741 songs which are 24 songs more than in the year before. These songs came from all over the world and include artists from 55 nations, one nation more than in 2012. Let's start with the Top 6 nations in my charting year 2013: 1. (1.) USA 2. (3.) Germany 3. (2.) England 4. (---) Sweden 5. (4.) Austria 6. (5.) Canada Back in 2012 South Korea was in the Top 6 at #6. This year South Korea missed the Top 6 by one spot. My home country dropped one spot, but it's definitely another good year for Austrian music. Maybe not here in this forum, but I think several songs could have been hits outside my chart or Austria. So let's have a close look at the artists which were big on my chart. These are my Top 10 artists from 2013: TY | LY | | Artist | Info | 10. | (---) | | Christina Aguilera | Six chart hits and one as a featured act brings her the first year-end position. Four out of these seven songs reached the Top 10 with “Let there be love” as her biggest hit in 2013. At the moment two of those seven songs are on the way up in my chart. Both songs “We remain” and “Say something” could be Top 10 hits by next year. | 9. | (5.) | | Anouk | Two years ago my favourite artist Anouk was in my Top 3 of the artists of the year. Last year she dropped down two spots and this year she ended at #9. Not even her participation in the Eurovision Song Contest 2013 helped her to avoid this drop. Unfortunately this last album “Sad singalong songs” is weaker than her previous work so it it explains why she had only one #1 hit out of this album this year. | 8. | (---) | | Ben Montague | This is Ben Montague’s year on my chart. Unfortunately I found out about him very late so his debut album “Overcome” charted until this year. His 2012 "Tales of flying and falling" followed late 2013. Up-to-date this is best album on my chart including one #1 hit. “Love like stars” reached #1 some weeks ago and stayed there for two weeks. Totally he had 12 chart hits this year and 6 of these songs entered my Top 20. | 7. | (3.) | | Emma | Last year Italian singer Emma did a little bit better than this year. I’ve to say a little bit, because at the end of this year her latest album “Schiena” produced three Top 10 hits and two #1 hits. Her biggest hit this year is “Dimentico tutto” which spent three weeks at the top. The last edition of this year’s chart showed that her third single out of this album “L’amore non mi basta” is spending it’s 2nd week at the Top. | 6. | (---) | | Taylor Swift | Here is the third debut on my top artists of 2013. Taylor Swift charted with 11 songs on my chart and had one #1 hit this year. “I knew you were trouble.” was her 2nd #1 hit following last year’s smash hit “We are never ever getting back together”. Her album “Red” had mixed success on my chart. Five songs from this album reached my Top 10 and four of the songs I’ve charted from this album so far missed the Top 60. Two of these four songs are relatively new on my chart so there is a chance that these songs could climb up the chart. | 5. | (---) | | Jillette Johnson | This is the fourth debut and there is one more to come. Jillette Johnson debuted in 2013 with her monster hit “Torpedo” on my chart. She released this year her debut album “Water in a whale” which is for me comparable with Vanessa Carlton’s debut album “Be not nobody” which I really enjoy until today. Until now she had six chart hits out of her debut album and four of these songs entered the Top 10. Her latest chart hit is “Last bus out” which is on its way into the Top 10. | 4. | (1.) | | Kelly Clarkson | Last year Kelly Clarkson sat enthroned. This year she dropped down three spots and can be found outside of the Top 3. But it was another successful year for her. Five songs reached the Top 10. One missed the Top 10 by one spots. “Hello” and “People like us” peaked at #1 so it was a good year, but three artists did a little bit better. | 3. | (---) | | Pink | With the release of her “The truth about love” album Pink reached new peaks on my chart. As Kelly Clarkson she had two #1 hits this year. Her biggest hit up-to-date is “True love” with Lily Rose Cooper better known as Lily Allen. Beside her #1 hits two more songs reached the Top 10. So her actual hit “Walk of shame” which peaked this week at #6. Two more songs are at the moment on their way up the chart. “Beam me up” reached the Top 20 this week and “Slut like you” peaked at #26 this week. And there are several songs to come from this album so that she should be in my year-end 2014 as well. | 2. | (4.) | | Matt Cardle | Sure I prefer female artists. But Matt Cardle is on his run to be my #1 artist of the year. At the moment the British X-Factor winner is my favourite male artist. Back in 2012 he had the #1 hit of the year with “Starlight” and this year? He placed 12 songs on my chart. This year his most successful song had been “It’s only love” which you should find in this year’s Top 10. Maybe he gets the 2nd year-end #1 which would be the first time in history that this happens. Three more songs beside “It’s only love” peaked within the Top 10 and four more songs reached the Top 30 out of three different albums. While the last songs of his debut album “Letters” finished their chart run one song from his third album “Porcelain” reached my chart too. “Loving you” a duet with Melanie C. was the first single which had been released in Austria! | 1. | (7.) | | Alanis Morissette | And here she is. Alanis Morissette is my artist of the year in 2013. She also had two #1 hits this year. Her first had been “Receive” which spent eight consecutive weeks at the top back in 2012, but returned for two more weeks in 2013. And then there is “Spiral” which reached #1 in August this year. If you compare her with the other artists you can find out that she had “only” nine chart hits this year, but six of these songs found their way into the Top 10. “Numb” and “Havoc” are performing a little bit weak, but have the chance to do better in the next weeks. |
Before I start with the review I've to point out two interesting facts. For the first time a #1 song missed the year-end Top 100. It's Emma's latest smash hit "L'amore non mi basta". Then there is the fact that the whole year-end Top 3 could have been the year-end #1 in all of the years before, but only one could it be this year! Let's stay tuned.

100 – 91
|
| international | note | 100 | | no success | Fard feat. Bobby V. – Zu spät/I remember when
Points: 706,6 Peak: #16 Weeks: 15 Album: Bellum et pax
If you’re following my chart you’ll have noticed that I’m not a fan of rap music. Even this music is in my mother language. Fard is a well-known rapper in Germany. With his latest album “Bellum et pax” he reached #2 in Germany. “Zu spät/I remember when” is a single out of this album and shone with good lyrics. The bilingualism was also interesting so that this Hip Hop song reached #100 in this review. | 99 | | #24 #58 #5 #14 #15 #13 #6 | Paramore – Still into you
Points: 714,4 Peak: #15 Weeks: 15 Album: Paramore
Unfortunately the 4th album “Paramore” was a big mistake in my opinion. I really enjoyed the bands past two albums, but this was … . I didn’t have a connection to this album except two singles. There first single “Now” peaked #55 and failed to get major impact. “Still into you” did better and reached a Top 20 status. In the end I’m hoping that they will move on and produce a better follow up. | 98 | | #103
| Ingrid Michaelson – Fire
Points: 714,5 Peak: #20 Weeks: 15 Album: Human again
“Fire” is a piano driven song and not a typical song by Ingrid Michaelson. In my eyes this is her best song she has released. Internationally she hadn’t big success with this song. Only #3 in the bubbling under of the US charts was the best she got. | 97 | | no success | Aurea – Look at me now
Points: 716,1 Peak: #16 Weeks: 15 Album: Soul notes
This is the first out of two songs in my Top 100 by Portuguese star Aurea. “Look at me now” hasn’t released as a single until now. This song is one of my favourites of her 2nd album “Soul notes”. | 96 | | #33 #46 (Wallonia)
| Tal feat. Flo Rida – Danse
Points: 720,9 Peak: #11 Weeks: 15 (still charting) Album: À l’infini
With her first single from “À l’infini” she reached a new peak on my chart. And no it’s not the Flo Rida part which helped this song to get up the chart. It’s only Tal who become a new favourite of French pop music for me. Next year could be her year, because I’d like to buy this album with more good pop songs. | 95 | | no success | Matt Cardle – Anyone else
Points: 731,9 Peak: #20 Weeks: 16 Album: The fire
Matt Cardle placed five songs into this year’s Top 100. “Anyone else” had been the 3rd single out of his 2nd album “The fire”. This song is very good, but this special song failed to reach my Top 10. | 94 | | #1 #1 #1 #7 #8 #1 #1 #2
| Passenger – Let her go
Points: 733,7 Peak: #14 Weeks: 15 Album: All the little lights
“Let her go” was one of the biggest hits in 2013. It was Passenger’s 1st hit and he gained several #1’s all over the world. On my chart he was a little bit late, but in the end “Let her go” climbed until #14. A Top 10 status was out of reach, but this is definitely a good song to remember 2013. | 93 | | no success | The Neverdies – Miss U
Points: 737,3 Peak: #17 Weeks: 15 Album: TBA
They had their breakthrough on my chart with this song. It’s a clever song which includes a very popular whistling part. The follow up single struggled a little bit, so this is their only Top 100 hit. | 92 | | #71 #37
| Christina Aguilera & Blake Shelton – Just a fool
Points: 741,2 Peak: #13 Weeks: 15 Album: Lotus
Christina Aguilera reached the Top 100 with two song which couldn’t have been more different. This one is her country pop single “Just a fool”. It took a time to unfold its charme, but in the end this song with Blake Shelton reached a good chart position. | 91 | | no success | Mandisa – What if we were real
Points: 745,0 Peak: #22 Weeks: 16 Album: What if we were real
This is one of those songs which should have been released as a single. Mandisa decided not to release it as a single, but on my chart this is her biggest hit until today. I believe that this is the best song she had sung so far. |

Good to see Paramore and Passenger in the top 100 Shame Kate missed out there though! Both of those charted for me in 2012 so sadly she had nothing on my chart in 2013.

Good to see Paramore and Passenger in the top 100 Shame Kate missed out there though! Both of those charted for me in 2012 so sadly she had nothing on my chart in 2013. I waited the whole year to find a new song from her on your chart. I hope she'll do a couple of new songs next year.

90 – 81
|
| international | note | 90 | | #49 #74 #3 #158
| Anouk – Birds
Points: 749,6 Peak: #19 Weeks: 15 Album: Sad singalong songs
When I first heard that Anouk is participating in the Eurovision Song Contest I was very excited. She did a good job although this song didn’t work good for me. Sure it was a Top 20 hit, but I expect more from her. And there are two more songs from her in the countdown. | 89 | | no success
| Manda – Sweetest heartbreak
Points: 752,7 Peak: #12 Weeks: 15 Album: -
Manda is maybe only known in her home country Sweden. She participated in X-Factor where she finished 6th overall. “Sweetest heartbreak” was her debut single. With this catchy song she made in directly into the Top 20 and nearly reached the Top 10. I hope that she will release a new single next year. | 88 | | #6 #6 #60
| Phillip Phillips – Gone gone gone
Points: 752,8 Peak: #13 Weeks: 15 Album: The world from the side of the moon
A Swedish X-Factor participant is followed by the winner of the 11th season of American Idol. His 2nd single “Gone gone gone” is a good folk song. This song remembered me of “Love love love” by Avalanche City which reach in the year-end of 2011 #5. “Gone gone gone” didn’t went so far, but it’s a good song. | 87 | | #82 #51 #39 #87
| Bonnie McKee – American girl
Points: 758,0 Peak: #13 Weeks: 15 Album: -
Back in 2004 Bonnie McKee released her debut album and her first single. Both single and album had no big success. So she wrote songs. Most of these got famous by Katy Perry. In 2013 she get started with “American girl”. For me it took a while before I charted this song. The catchy refrain helped her to get a solid position in this review. | 86 | | no success
| Marla Blumenblatt – Cornetto
Points: 764,3 Peak: #10 Weeks: 14 Album: Immer diese Boys
With Caro Emerald the retro trend started. This year young Austrian artist Marla Blumenblatt tried it the same way. She is the first Austrian artist in the Top 100. Marla Blumenblatt decided for 60’s German rock which is best represented by Peter Krause. “Cornetto” is a song about an ice cream and much more. | 85 | | #5
| Delta Goodrem – Wish you were here
Points: 765,53 Peak: #17 Weeks: 15 Album: Child of the universe
Delta Goodrem had some minor hits on my chart. “Wish you were here” is a slow and thoughtful song. With this song she reached the Top 20 for the first time. | 84 | | #60 #49 #20 #17 #15 #24 #14
| Avril Lavigne – Here’s to never growing up
Points: 765,54 Peak: #16 Weeks: 15 Album: Avril Lavigne
After two album which were big flops she tried it for a new one. The first single out of this self-titled album was “Here’s to never growing up”. While I had my problems with the singles out of the two mentioned albums I liked this song with the first listen. This song failed to reach the Top 10, but it was a good first single choice in my opinion. | 83 | | no success
| Scouting for Girls – Without you
Points: 770,9 Peak: #2 Weeks: 17 Album: The light between us
In December 2012 this song reached its peak at #2. This brought them #183 in last year’s review. The split record prevented Scouting for Girls for getting a big hit (Top 30 at least) in my year-end review. An interesting fact about this song is that “Without you” is the only single by this band which didn’t chart in UK. | 82 | | #50
| Madeline Juno – Error
Points: 792,7 Peak: #9 Weeks: 12 (still charting) Album: -
It was an interesting year for young female singers. In Sweden a newcomer reached #1 and didn’t retire for weeks. In Germany this young girl Madeline Juno has been overseen a little bit. “Error” is an interesting song and is absolutely comparable with this Swedish song which will be found later. Finally she reached the chart with this song, but I thought that she would do better in Germany. | 81 | | #54 #53 #42 #6 #6 #46 #14 #8
| Selena Gomez – Come and get it
Points: 793,8 Peak: #11 Weeks: 15 Album: Stars dance
“Come and get it” was the first single appart from Disney. As I’m not into her “old” stuff I oversaw this song at first. When I gave this song a chance it developed to a good song wich nearly reached the Top 10. And it helped that I charted the follow up “Slow down” (a later #1) at the same time. |

80 – 71
|
| international | note | 80 | | no success
| Daniel Baron – All over now
Points: 798,1 Peak: #10 Weeks: 16 Album: It’s time
“All over now” is the first and until today the only single I’ve charted by South African Daniel Baron. This song is the kind of pop rock song I’m often listen too. I personally think that this song should have gained attention outside South Africa. | 79 | | no success
| Ben Montague – Never enough
Points: 801,3 Peak: #10 Weeks: 16 Album: Overcome
Ben Montague placed three songs in my Top 100. In 2013 he charted with several songs from his debut album and from the follow up “Tales of flying and falling”. This is the only song from his debut album “Overcome” in the Top 100. | 78 | | #26 #58
| Sara Bareilles – Brave
Points: 802,5 Peak: #11 Weeks: 15 Album: The blessed unrest
Since her debut with “Love song” I liked her work. Both albums “Little voice” and “Kaleidoscope heart” did well for me, but as well as Paramore her last album “The blessed unrest” is nothing for me. Only her single “Brave” which is similar to “Uncharted” reached a notable spot with a peak at #11. | 77 | | no success
| Lou Bega – Give it up
Points: 806,0 Peak: #15 Weeks: 15 Album: A little bit of 80s
2013 Lou Bega who is best known for his 1990’s smash hit “Mambo No. 5” released a cover album. He covered only songs from the 1980’s. The first single out of this album had been the cover “Give it up” by KC & The Sunshine Band. I’ve heard this song several times before and I can say that this is a very good cover. So far it is the best cover song on my chart. | 76 | | #79
| Autumn Hill – Anything at all
Points: 810,7 Peak: #5 Weeks: 16 Album: Favourite mistake
Country music on my chart? Sure there are some artists who had minor hits and back in 2012 Carrie Underwood had a Top 10 track with “Good girl”. Until now the most favourite country band comes Canada. With their debut single “Anything at all” they reached the Top 5 in January. Her best single can be found later in this countdown. | 75 | | #22
| 9Muses – Wild
Points: 813,7 Peak: #10 Weeks: 15 Album: Wild EP
This year’s highest charting K-Pop song is by Girl band 9Muses. Their dance track “Wild” is the title track from the “Wild EP”. It has been the only K-Pop Top 10 hit in 2013, but at the moment several K-Pop songs including their follow up “Gun” are on their way into the Top 20. | 74 | | no success
| 77 Bombay Street – Wake me up
Points: 817,3 Peak: #10 Weeks: 15 (still charting) Album: Oko town
With their debut album the stormed my chart back in 2011. Their 2nd album “Oko town” didn’t as good as this debut album. They had only two Top 10 hits out of this album. One of these is the album track “Wake me up” not confuse with Avicii’s mega hit. The best song out of this album can be found within the Top 50. | 73 | | no success
| Ben Montague – Another hard fall
Points: 819,7 Peak: #10 Weeks: 14 (still charting) Album: Tales of flying and falling
“Another hard fall” has been the 2nd single out of Ben Montague’s 2nd album. This song was officially released back in 2012 and reached on my chart its peak in November 2013. While I absolutely prefer his 2nd album and this is one of my favourite songs from him I’m going with the 1st single “Love like stars” from this album which can be found later on the list. | 72 | | #12 #3 #12 #4
| Jessie J – It’s my party
Points: 822,1 Peak: #5 Weeks: 11 (still charting) Album: Alive
While her 1st single from her 2nd album “Alive” failed to chart “It’s my party” did better. This is a typical fun song with a catchy refrain. Sure it is no 2nd “Domino”, but it's a cool track. | 71 | | no success
| Anouk – Kill
Points: 825,9 Peak: #8 Weeks: 14 Album: Sad singalong songs
I’ve written a lot of this special Anouk album. “Kill” is one of the few Top 10 hits out of this album. The best song from her is coming later. |

Points: 832,3 Peak: #16 Weeks: 16 Album: New day dawn
There can’t be found a lot of Reggae music on my chart. Only German artist Gentleman has had several hits for me over the last years. “In my arms” was the 2nd single out of his latest album “New day dawn”. | 69 | | no success
| Kelly Clarkson – The war is over
Points: 836,1 Peak: #9 Weeks: 16 Album: Stronger
With her album “Stronger” Kelly Clarkson reached a new high for me. “The war is over” is another emotional song by her. This song hasn’t been released as a regular single. | 68 | | #32 #28 #28 #22 #7 #5 #7
| Taylor Swift feat. Ed Sheeran – Everything has changed
Points: 838,2 Peak: #8 Weeks: 15 Album: Red
Sure I like some of Taylor Swift’s songs in the past. Releasing her album “Red” produced a lot of Top 10 hits for me. Her duet with Ed Sheeran peaked at #8 and is one of those songs beside “I knew you were trouble.” or “We are never ever getting back together” which will always a favourite song from her for me. | 67 | | #10 #10 #34 #56 | Maroon 5 – Love somebody
Points: 841,0 Peak: #9 Weeks: 15 Album: Overexposed
In the past I was no big fan of the music by Maroon 5 and this fact only changed a little bit this year. One of the bands biggest hit in 2013 has been “Daylight”. This song only ended at #122 in this review. Their biggest hit is “Love somebody” which is their first Top 10 hit. | 66 | | no success | Hinder – Should have known better
Points: 842,4 Peak: #8 Weeks: 17 Album: Welcome to the freakshow
For the 2nd time Hinder debuted with a song on my chart. “Should have known better” is a very good rock song and unfolded its charm late. It took a while, but this song reached the Top 10 in August. | 65 | | #26
| Natália Kelly – Shine
Points: 842,7 Peak: #9 Weeks: 19 Album: Natália Kelly
In 2013 a young girl from the USA participated in the Eurovision Song Contest for Austria. Natália Kelly is originally from Hartford, Connecticut but now living in Bad Vöslau. When I first heard the song I wasn’t excited that this song is representing Austria, but like “Should have known better” by Hinder this song grow on me and reached the Top 10 just before the Eurovision Song Contest. | 64 | | #3
| Emma – Amami
Points: 843,5 Peak: #8 Weeks: 13 (still charting) Album: Schiena
In Italy Emma is a big star. “Amami” was the first single out of her 3rd album “Schiena”. It is a good song, but on my chart this song is standing in the shadow of her smash hit “L’amore non mi basta” which was the first #1 which missed the Top 100 and her other #1 hit out of this album. | 63 | | #6 #3 #5 #21 #28 #4 #8 #2 #1 #1
| Bastille – Pompeii
Points: 843,7 Peak: #9 Weeks: 16 Album: Bad blood
I noted Bastille for the first time in 2011 when “Icarus” and “Flaws” were little Indie hits in Austria. Two years later Bastille had his breakout in UK. Their biggest hit “Pompeii” reached my Top 10 back in June. | 62 | | #89
| Luna Simao – Es geht bis zu den Wolken
Points: 846,1 Peak: #3 Weeks: 10 (still charting) Album: Es geht bis zu den Wolken EP
At the end of September she participated in Stefan Raab’s show “Bundesvision Song Contest” where she finished 6th. “Es geht bis zu den Wolken” is a fresh new song for a German Pop song and reached very fast my Top 3. | 61 | | no success | Satin Circus – If you love me
Points: 848,5 Peak: #1 Weeks: 8 (still charting) Album: -
Before summer 2013 I checked out a new song by a boy band from Finland. Their name was Satin Circus and their song was “Emma”. This song is reaching a top spot in this year’s countdown, but more later. Their 2nd single also reached very fast the #1 on my chart. Unfortunately there was a stronger song out there so they only stayed for one week at the top with this song. |

Kelly, Taylor, Maroon 5 and Bastille As expected, "Love Somebody" is much higher for me.
