Which artist on your chart took the longest amount of time before hitting #1 for the first time? This week, for me, the record was actually tied. The Red Hot Chili Peppers made their top 40 debut on July 4, 1999 with "Scar Tissue", but didn't reach #1 until August 28, 2011 with "The Adventures Of Rain Dance Maggie". Train made their top 40 debut on January 16, 2000 with "Meet Virginia". They finally reached #1 on March 11, 2012 with "Drive By". Both took 4438 days, or 634 weeks to reach #1. EDIT: Collective Soul has since broken the record. They debuted February 21, 1999 with "Run" and hit #1 October 11, 2015 with "This".

Sure you don't mean 2011 for the Red Hot Chili Peppers?

Here's the thing. I don't know how to really answer this properly so I will dig deep into my memory on this one. I know it's definitely not happened in the last 15 months.

The Chili Peppers hold the record for me too. "Dani California" was their first chart entry back in 2006 and they never went to #1 until a few weeks ago with "Look Around".

Snoop Dogg has the record with six years between his debut entry (Drop It Like It's Hot) and first #1 (Kush, with Dr. Dre and Akon).

Pitbull appeared on my chart in 2005 on the song "Shake" with the Ying Yang Twins. He hit #1 last year with "Give Me Everything".

Every #1 song this year has been by a debut artist.
So I'll have to go back to Era2 (2000-2006) to research.
~
EDIT
I think it's Alanis Morrisette.
She debuted with "You Oughta Know" in 1994 and
hit #1 with "Hands Clean" in 2002.

Garbage debuted with "Why Do You Love Me" in the spring of 2005, "Blood For Poppies" went to #1 the first week of April this year.

My answer for this would be Hanson, who hit #1 for the first time on 23 January 2011, with MMMBop being their first song in my chart back in 1997.
In the past three weeks, Nelly Furtado and Nelly have both had their first #1 songs on my chart. Nelly F first appeared in 2001 (I'm Like A Bird) and Nelly appeared in 2000 (Country Grammar).

Stuff like this makes me wish I'd never have stopped doing personal charts after I first started in 2001(? I think "Nobody Wants To Be Lonely" was my first official #1). If I'd continued the whole time, it's probably either Sara Bareilles ("Love Song" would have been first and "King Of Anything" hit #1 in spring 2010) or Adele ("Chasing Pavements;" "Rolling In The Deep" in Jan. 2011).

Jason Mraz got his first #1 on my chart this week, it took him 9 years to do so.
Nelly Furtado waited 10 years for her first #1 as "Crocodile Rock" topped last year from Gnomeo & Juliet. As a featured artist, Elton John took 15 years to top the chart.

Jason Mraz just hit #1 this week for the first time with "I Won't Give Up". So that would be about 9 years, although "Lucky" came close back in 2008 peaking at #2.
The longest has to be the Foo Fighters. When I had just a top 5 back in '96 they charted with "Big Me". Then when I expanded to a top 30 in '97 they briefly charted with "Monkey Wrench". Their first and only #1 was "Long Road to Ruin" back in 2008.

My current #1's artist holds this record now, Foo Fighters. First song charted in 1997; "Run" is their first #1, in 2017.
Prior to that the longest was Daft Punk (1997 first charted; 2015 first #1), and Hanson (1997 first charted; 2011 first #1) prior to that.

In terms of the actual chart, Pet Shop Boys first charted in 2001 with Peter Rauhaufer as "The Collaboration" for "Break 4 Love", then got to #1 in 2013 with "Vocal". However, PSB have been one of my favourites since the early 80's and would have had #1's in the 80's had I been making a chart.
So the longest gap for an artist starting out in the era of my chart is Beyonce, who first appeared with Destiny's Child at the end of 2000 and solo in 2003 with "In Da Club", and got her only #1 in 2009 with "Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)".
