CHART ME UP: No Stagger For “Jagger”, Taking Two Weeks At The Top
They see a chart door and they want it painted maroon. Well, I guess it comes with the territory, as Maroon 5 and their “honky tonk woman”, Christina Aguilera, spend a second week at #1 for “Moves Like Jagger”. You can find it on the re-release of the band’s album, Hands All Over, while Aguilera has yet to announce another solo release. However, the duet between the two “Voice” judges may have to roll out of the top spot like a stone, as songs from the The Script and Adele move at bionic speed towards the #1 spot. Well, “bionic speed” is subjective. The speed at which I’m driving you crazy with all these tangents is also subjective. Let’s change the subject. Ive.
In a week with not too much big movement, songs from Colbie Caillat (12-9), Will Young (20-16), Jack’s Mannequin (28-25) and One Direction (31-26) all manage decent-sized leaps. Of note, Caillat’s track is her seventh consecutive top-10 hit on my chart, and the second from her album, All Of You.
This week’s biggest mover, with a leap of six notches from 37-31, is “We Owned The Night” by Lady Antebellum. The song’s about to take a huge ten-spot leap on the Country Chart this week, meaning there’s no signs of stopping this trio for another era full of big hits. All four radio singles from their last album, Need You Now, made my chart, with the biggest being, of course, the title track, an eleven-week #1 song last year.
Two debuts this week in the top 40, the biggest of them at #35: “Black Out The Sun” by Darren Hayes. The Australian singer appears to have peaked at #4 on my chart with his previous single, “Talk Talk Talk”, but it is bulleted, perhaps not for much longer. “Sun” is the second UK single from his forthcoming album, Secret Codes & Battleships. The single is out October 3, and the album is out October 17. The Australian public is getting a separate single, “Bloodstained Heart”, which is digitally released this week, and appears at #6 in my Top 10 Next In Line.
Another familiar face is back at #38. “Mr. Know It All” is the seventeenth hit on my chart for Kelly Clarkson, who recently graced the #1 spot with Jason Aldean on “Don’t You Wanna Stay”. Clarkson’s new hit is just the third “Mr.” entry to make my top 40, following “Mr. Bartender (It’s So Easy)”, a top-20 hit for Sugar Ray in 2003, and “Mr. Brightside”, a #1 smash for three weeks for The Killers in 2005. Her last leadoff single, “My Life Would Suck Without You”, peaked at #2 in 2009.
Michael Africk hasn’t had a single in twelve years, and next week could be his lucky break on my chart with “Make It Loud”. In addition to Darren Hayes, as aforementioned, Juke Kartel, Jessie J and Marti Dodson/Jaret Reddick are also looking for empty slots in the top 40, while a new song from JoJo could also potentially impact the chart in a few weeks.
MUSIC PURCHASES THIS WEEK

Robbie Williams – In And Out Of Consciousness: Greatest Hits 1990-2010 (Borders)
Selena Gomez & The Scene – When The Sun Goes Down (Borders)
Take That – Progressed (I imported this from CDWow)
ADAM'S TOP 40 FLASHBACK: SEPTEMBER 4, 2005
Ever since “Moves Like Jagger” hit #1 last week, I wanted to showcase one of the weeks where I charted “Rough Justice”, a single from The Rolling Stones’s 2005 album, A Bigger Bang. Well, this so happens to be the debut week of the song. This era featured a ton of older performers climbing upward with then-current hits: in the top 50 this particular week, songs from Bananarama, Bon Jovi, Duran Duran, Eric Clapton, Simply Red and Tracy Chapman were all filling the chart. Songs from Bonnie Raitt, Bryan Adams, Herbie Hancock, Paul McCarney, Simple Minds and Tina Turner were also in the lower regions of the New & Active.
THE TOP TEN
#10: Duran Duran - Nice (peaked at #10)
#09: The Killers – All These Things That I’ve Done (peaked at #9)
#08: Fefe Dobson – Don’t Let It Go To Your Head (peaked at #8)
#07: Jack Johnson – Good People (peaked at #7)
#06: Kelly Clarkson – Because Of You (would peak at #1 for four weeks)
#05: Hootie & The Blowfish – One Love (would peak at #4)
#04: Josh Kelley – Only You (would peak at #3)
#03: Rob Thomas – This Is How A Heart Breaks (peaked at #1 for two weeks)
#02: D.H.T. – Listen To Your Heart (peaked at #2)
#01: Daniel Powter – Bad Day (peaked at #1 for six weeks in 2005, and #1 for 10 weeks in 2006)
