Alright! The top 20 begins 20. Fall Out Boy - Dance, Dance| From Under The Cork Tree | Why don't you show me a little bit of spark You've been saving for his mattress I only want sympathy, in the form of you Crawling into bed with me Dance, Dace We're falling apart to half timeYeah you can hate this band for going popular. Yeah you can hate them because eventually they will turn into Simple Plan & Good Charlotte. But much like SP & GC, who had initial good songs like 'Addicted' and 'The Anthem', this is when we have to like FOB the most. This tune is get out of your seat and have a good ol' time with friends at it's finest. It's catchy, quirky, almost jive-worthy. A funny video, at least I think, to boot. 19. The Bravery - Unconditional| The Bravery | I hold the whole world accused I've only got myself to blame I wonder why, I never wonder why The easiest things are so hard I just want, I just want love I just want, I just want loveThe 3rd of 4 Bravery tunes to make the 2005 catalogue. Even though there is still one more to come, I'd wager this is the best tune off their incredible debut album. When performed live, it propels you into it's catchy bridge and lead into that incredible chorus that everyone seems to totally dig. Like I've said, if this is the type of song that make them comparable to The Killers, it's could be simply because sometimes they do it a little bit better. 18. Athlete - Wires| Tourist | Running down corridors Through automatic doors Got to get to you, got to see this through I see hope is here, in a plastic box I've seen christmas lights, reflect in your eyesNow this is absolutely terrorizing music. The one part where the lead goes acapella and shouts "Down corridors, through, automatic doors", is actually capable of giving me chills time and time again. This is one of those songs that does get dreadful because you play it to death at first, but then I picked it back up a few months later, and now, it's just timeless. Haunting Keane-Coldplay-Snow Patrol-esque music that comes out Britain, but this is the cream of the crop. 17. Green Day - Holiday| American Idiot | Zieg Heil to the president gasman Bombs away is your punishment Pulverize the Eiffel towers Who criticize your government Bang bang goes the broken glass and Kill all the ***s that don't agreeThe highest year-end charting position for a single off 'American Idiot' after the lead title track hit #22 in 2004. This is the highlight of their monstrous album that reclaimed the fame they knew was there's as the leaders of the punk pop regime. 'Holiday', once again, is politically charged and motivated and is one of the best songs to hear performed live. 16. The Killers - Smile Like You Mean It| Hot Fuss | Save some face, you know you've only got one Change your ways while you're young Boy, one day you'll be a man Oh girl, he'll help you understand Smile like you mean itThe first of THREE Killers singles to make the chart, just wait to see where the other two end up. After the god awful #43 showing of 'Somebody Told Me' on my year-end in 2004, I'm glad I finally came to my senses starting it off with this one. This is probably one of the true stand outs on their album because it's so conceivably different than the rest of their catalogue. It's deceptive, alluring, and even somewhat mesmerizing - and it's just because. No reason. How can you not like this song? There has to be something physically wrong with your genome. Albums 2-1 just around the corner, and tunes #15-11 coming up tomorrow!

I've missed a load here but really want to comment on the last 5. All of which are amazing, and two (Athlete and Killers) were also in my Top 20 of 2005, so you have great taste Roger! ;D
Shamefully I haven't got in to FOB yet; but both S,WGD and Dance, Dance are very catchy and should chart in 2006. I also shamefully didn't give "Unconditional" a deserving chart run, but I figured putting the album in my Top 10 covered that.
Other than that it's all looking great - liking the comments too.
Bring on the Top 10!!!

Here we are gang! So close to the top 10. 15. My Chemical Romance - The Ghost Of You| Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge | Get the feeling that you're never All alone and I remember now At the top of my lungs in my arms she dies She dies At the end of the world, Or the last thing I see You are, Never coming homeThe second of three MCR singles to make the chart. Have to wait a few more days to see where the 3rd ends up. And talk about diversity. They come out with rip roaring I'm Not Okay & Helena, and then they get all sentimental on our asses and put out this rocking ballad tear jerker and puts our mind at ease that MCR is no longer a one trick pony. 14. Kelly Clarkson - Behind These Hazel Eyes| Breakaway | Swallow me then spit me out For hating you I blame myself Seeing you it kills me now No I don't cry on the outside anymore Here I am, once again I'm torn into piecesThe first of THREE Clarkson singles to make the chart. She's had an incredible 2005 and is one of the most talented and respectable pop/rock singers of our generation. More on her in future write ups. But this song was fists of fury, and she looked and sounded damn sexy and convincing waving them fists. 13. The Academy Is - Skeptics & True Believers| Almost Here | Would you believe me If I said I didn't need you Because I wouldn't believe you If you said the same to me Someone, somewhere, said some things That may have sparked some sympathy But dont believe, don't believe a word you heard about meAnd here they are. The most infectious punk-pop group of 2005. And this is their crowning achievement. Hearing it live was the most fun I've had at a show all year as their energy is blown out of proportion through this undeniably catchy little number. Barely ringing in over 3 minutes, this is the most fun you can have in a car without taking your clothes off. 12. Kelly Clarkson - Because Of You| Breakaway | I watched you die, I heard you cry Every night in your sleep I was so young , you should have known better than to lean on me You never thought of anyone else, you just saw your pain And now I cry, in the middle of the night For the same damn thingAnd that's 2/3 for Kelly Clarkson. Now do you realize how good she is? She released the most likeable and universally accepted pop-rock singles since Avril Lavigne went blonde, and with Europe also feeling her wrath, this once hailed American Idol is so much more than that; she's a bonafied, credible superstar. Oh, and this song? Pop perfection. Beautiful, simple, elegant, exquisite. She's all those things and more. 11. Hawthorne Heights - Ohio Is For Lovers| Silence In Black & White | Because you kill me You know you do, you kill me well You like it too, and I can tell You'll never stop until, my final breath is gone Spare me just, three last words I love you is all she heard I'll wait for you, but I can't wait foreverSpare the hate. Spare the ridicule. Get over the "so cut my wrists and black my eyes", and you'll see much more than a suicide anthem for the emo youth of today. This is by far one of the best punk, teen angst written songs I've ever heard. Yeah it's a bit dramatic, but it represented a huge debt I was feeling this past summer. This is about so much more than slitting your wrists and applying mascara to your eyelids, it's about the pain and despair you feel when the girl you want badly is f.ucking with you. And it's not a good feeling to have. Sure, call me emo, but this song rocks. Tomorrow, we launch into the top 10!

And here we are. The top 10 of 2005. 10. Gwen Stefani - Hollaback Girl| Love. Angel. Music. Baby | I heard that you were talking shit And you didn't think that I would hear it People hear you talking like that Getting everybody fired upDespite how deviant the rest of Gwen's majestic debut album is from this little ditty, you knew this was going to be her stadium anthem, her monstrous hit. And it was - with just cause. This shit was freakin' bananas son. It got everybody rip roaring in the club, it got everybody chanting that shit like 'I got soul, but I'm not a soldier' would later in the year (and soon coming on this chart!). So despite how commercial, or how "stupid" you may find this song, I think it's the epitome of Gwen Stefani's wacky, crazy, and even "goofball" sense of style. Have fun with it. Don't analyze it too hard, you'll hurt yourself. 9. The Bravery - An Honest Mistake| The Bravery | People, they don't mean a thing to you They move right through you, just like your breath But sometimes, I still think of you And I just wanted to, just wanted you to know My old friend I swear I never meant for this I never meantThat's 4/4 now for The Bravery. I think this is the universally accepted "catchiest" song of 2005. I mean, who could argue? The insane beat, the incredible chorus, and the synthed-out to the max vocals are the icing on the cake of this perfect manifestation of 80's new wave. The Bravery have much to be proud as they brought their own little "Somebody Told Me" to the masses, and people were listening. It became a cult favourite, being released in January, and still attracting legions of fans in July. It's just that good! 8. Death Cab For Cutie - Soul Meets Body| Plans | Cause in my head there's a greyhound station Where I send my thoughts to far off destinations So they may have a chance of finding a place Where they're far more suited than here ....Cause you're the only song I want to hear A melody softly soaring through my atmosphereThe opening melody to this song is so pleasant, so Christmas-ey, and I knew I was in for a real treat. It takes them three well phrased verses to get to the fantastic chorus where "brown eyes they hold near" are lit up in the incredible penmanship this band always offers. This is the most drive-along, with the sun room down, and friends in the front and back seat, single of 2005. 7. Madonna - Hung Up| Confessions On A Dance Floor | Every little thing that you say or do I'm hung up I'm hung up on you Waiting for your call, baby night and day I'm fed up I'm tired of waiting on youScrew Eric Prydz. This is was the euro dance hit of 2005. Madonna's triumphant return to the dancefloor, her leap back into the club that originally made her an icon. Despite how good 'American Life' actually was, she knew that to win back the hearts of her audience this is the type of record she needed to release. Needless to say, 'Hung Up' is her most well reviewed track in years and has been sitting pretty on top of the Europe charts for 6 weeks and even went top 10 in the US. But besides the stats, the Abba sampled track is innovating, stimulating, and a downright club romp that gets people fired up on it's crazy catchy chorus and equally awesome lead ins. Madonna's best in years. She's back bitches. 6. Kelly Clarkson - Since U Been Gone| Breakaway | You had your chance you blew it Out of sight, out of mind Shut your mouth I just can't take it ...But since you been gone I can breathe for the first time I'm so movin' on, yeah yeahKelly Clarkson will forever be labelled by this monstrous smash that was adored by her legion of pre-pubescent female fans, struggling punk musicians who have a cult favourite cover of the tune, and even just the general music loving public who could respect her talent and ability. Kelly's big pipes lead this roar against mankind in a way that you can't help but sing along, regardless of being a guy or girl (and I've seen it in the club/bar where guys sing this shit, and girls seem to dig it, lol). It's just one of those songs where if you didn't like it, you're just weird. It's what I like to call - pop perfection. Avril never did it this good, even 'I'm With You' wasn't this good, and yeah 'Boyfriend' was well liked, but please, at least Kelly didn't steal a riff from the Dead 60's. INCREDIBLE SHIAT. Tomorrow, #5-3. Be there.

"Hollaback Girl" and "Hung Up" - great to see them in the top 10. Don't care for "Since U Been Gone", but yes, it was a huge hit this year.

Top 10 looking great.
Kelly Clarkson was also my #6, most definately "pop perfection". I must have heard it 100's of times but I never burned out on it!
Madonna, DCFC and Gwen Stefani were all great mother truckin' hits of 2005. ;D
Really great to see The Bravery so high up too... the start of that song, the beat really draws you in and then it just goes crazy!
