The Top 20 starts now! 20. The Archies, Sugar Sugar -Funny how this song, from 1969, is still one of the most recognisable pop songs of all time. What's even more funny was that it's by a group of comic book characters. Well, not ACTUALLY comic book characters, because they can't sing. But the Archies, masterminded by former Monkees producer Don Kirschner, scored 2 Top 10 pop hits thanks to seasoned session vocalists including Andy Kim, Ron Dante, Ellie Greenwich, Jeanie Thomas and Toni Wine. 19. The Police, Every Breath You Take -The Police's biggest hit is easily "Every Breath You Take," from their 1983 album 'Synchronicity.' The Police, and this song, became staples of the 80's. The song continued to live when late 90's rap tycoon Puff Duddy sampled the hit in his tribute to slain rapper The Notorious B.I.G., "I'll Be Missing You." 18. U2, With Or Without You -U2's nasty love song in disguise, "With Or Without You" is considered to be one of the most misread songs of the 80's ("Every Breath You Take" is also included on this list). However, 'With Or Without You" was easily the masterstroke of 'The Joshua Tree,' the first U2 album to move away from politics and concentrate more personal relationships. 'Tree' went on to win Album Of The Year at the 1987 Grammy Awards. 17. Bryan Adams, Heaven -"Heaven" was Bryan Adams' first of three #1 hits State-side, and for good reason. Recently re-made by DJ Sammy, Adams' classic version, one of the defenitive ballads of the 80's, continues to be the standout track from 1984's "Reckless." 16. Cyndi Lauper, Time After Time -Cyndi Lauper was the original fun-loving, pink haired party girl. "Time After Time," one of the few ballads on her "She's So Unusual" album, proved that she wasn't all about rebellious fun and masturbation.

The next 5... 15. The Rolling Stones, Paint It Black -Released off their 1966 album "Aftermath," "Paint It Black" went on to become one of the Stones' best known hits. "Aftermath" was the first Rolling Stones full album of songs by Keith Richards and Mick Jagger, so the album is a landmark in its own right. The sitar in the beginning of the track is amazing, and the song is one of the best by the stones. The track has gone on to be covered by artists like punk-pop band gob, and Vanessa Carlton. 14. The Temptations, My Girl -Motown artists have always had a tradition of covering each other's work. You can look at The Miracles, Diana Ross, Marvin Gaye, or Stevie Wonder for examples. And gosh darn it, some of these covers turn out to be hits. This was the case with The Temptations version of "My Girl," a song penned by legend Smokey Robinson. To this day, "My Girl" remains as one of Motown's greatest hits, and honestly, it's the record all male vocal groups are measured by. 13. Radiohead, Street Spirit (Fade Out) -After the massive success of the album "Pablo Honey," specifically the song "Creep," Radiohead had a lot to live up to. Most had written off the band as a one-hit wonder. Well, that was before "The Bends" came out. Featuring Thom Yorke wailing over some of the most intense music, "The Bends" provided the band with hit after hit, although none registered with me the way that "Street Spirit (Fade Out)" ever did. It's simply the stark beauty of the tune. 12. Nirvana, All Apologies -"Live In New York," an album recored acoustically for MTV, was Nirvana's last collection recorded before the death of lead singer Kurt Cobain. What "Live" was is exactly what you assume... live versions of all of Nirvana's past hits, including the hauntingly beautiful and toned down version of "All Apologies," originally from the "In Ultro" album. Cobain's vocals are gritty, yet powerful, and this is the highlight of the album. 11. Bobby Darin, Mack The Knife -It may sound like a silly comparison, but Bobby Darin pulled a Madonna LONG before she ever did. Darin was a hit back in the 50s with popular rock hits like "Splish Splash" and "Dream Lover." So, when Darin announced he was going to release an album of pop standards, most thought of him as crazy. But hey, it worked now, didn't it? True, he was no Sinatra, but Bobby Darin's 1959 album, "That's All," launched the singer into the adult pop market. In fact, he was so good that he was the only act Sammy Davis Jr. refused to follow on stage. Pop music? Sure. Standards? You betcha. A Darrin classic? Absolutely.

We've entered the Top 10! 10. The Kinks, You Really Got Me -Many consider The Kinks the inventors of power rock, as up until 1964, when "You Really Got Me" was released, nothing as heavy as this was on the radio. And you know, despite being one of the driving forces behind rock in the 60's, The Kinks seem to be consistantly overshadowed by bands like The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. Such is life, though. The fact is, "You Really Got Me" remains to be one of the best known rock songs of all time, and helped cement The Kinks their place in Rock 'n' Roll history. 9. Madonna, Like A Prayer -Madonna seems dull these days compared to the young lady she used to be in the 80s. I mean, yeah, she kissed Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera last year, but in 1989, she had an onscreen inter-racial relationship and danced in front of a bunch of burning crosses. *sigh* Those were the days. In any case, this is serious stuff. This isn't Madonna being touched for the very first time; this is Madonna exorcising her demons. 8. Michael Jackson, Billie Jean -Remember back when Michael Jackson could sing this song without getting second thoughts about the lyrics? Coming from Jackson's 1982 classic, 'Thriller,' "Billie Jean" is a lean funk number with a clear message: "The kid is not my son." Probably one of the darkest dance tunes of the 80s. 7. John Lennon, Imagine -"Imagine" is easily the standout track from John Lennon's solo collection, and yet, it's also one of the most distinctive. You know, it's funny when you think about the 'Imagine' album in general. You have a track like "Imagine," which has become synonymous with peace, and "How Do You Sleep?," an almost bitchy track directed at former bandmate Paul McCartney. In any case, "Imagine" will forever be known as Lennon's solo legacy, and righfully so. 6. Elton John, Your Song -One of John's earliest tracks (1970), "Your Song" is one of the greatest love songs of all time. The song also established the songwriting team of Elton John and Bernie Taupin as a force not to mess with, a writing team as well known as Lennon and McCartney. The message of "Your Song" was direct, and the simplicity of the track made it classic.

Without further wait... 5. Journey, Don't Stop Believin' She's just a small town girl, living in a LONE-LY world, she took the midnight train going ann-eee-whereeee. Come on... how can you NOT love this song. One of three singles released off of Journey's 1981 album, 'Escape,' "Don't Stop Believin'" was one of the defining anthems of that generation. It's classic 'don't let yourself be dragged down' message was inspirational, and damn, this is the song Christina Ricci and Charlize Theron first made out to in "Monster," and that was HOT. 4. The Turtles, Happy Together Yes, another 60's song. But gosh darn it, it's irresistible. This was the first number one hit by The Turtles, and was released waaaaay back in 1967. This song have a lot of significant meaning to me, and that's probably why it's so high, but it deserves its spot. It's catchy, fun, and you can't help but sing along. Ba-da-ba-ba, Ba-da-ba-ba... 3. Etta James, At Last Bill, you just KNEW it was coming. I guess I just have a thing for classic love songs. Etta James' ode to love, "At Last," was released in 1961 and remains one of the best known R&B songs of all time. This was when R&B was just that: Rhythm and Blues, not hip-hop or whatever it is today. Etta James IS the Queen of Blues. 2. The Beatles, Yesterday One of the ultimate lost love songs, "Yesterday" by the Beatles stands alone in it's simplicity. Fronted by Paul McCartney, the song is soft, quiet, and nothing like some of their more fast and upbeat hits like "Help!" and "Come Together." Clocking in at just over two minutes, the song also features a string section, and works perfectly. 1. Fleetwood Mac, Go Your Own Way Yes, this is it: my favourite song of all time. Now, I don't know what it is about Fleetwood Mac, but the entire 'Rumours' album is amazing. Recorded in the midst of emotional turmoil caused by the break-up of two relationships and heavy drug use, 'Rumours' is filled with harsh emotions. However, at the same time, like "Yesterday," it's filled with lost love. Think about the lyrics: Loving you, isn't the right thing to do. How can I, change the things that I feel? If I could, baby I'd give you my world. Lindsay Buckingham was one of the best additions a musical group has ever recieved, and along with Stevie Nicks, launched Fleetwood Mac to international stardom.
