It is pointless for older demo radio stations like AC to have daily countdowns. The listeners are not active on new music so the programmers are not active in playing it.
In a city like Kelowna however, it's a bit different. Since there is no CHR/Pop, SUN FM is acting like the market Top 40. In that case, HotAC's should actively feature daily countdown shows to attract/keep the younger demo. Now, if they are adding not a whole lot of new music, obviously a daily countdown show is a bit of a stretch. I think SUN should add more new music - sure they have to worry about SILK, but investing in the younger demo by adding more music will hardly dent the HotAC demo they are going for.

I agree with you, 100%, Scot. When SunFM started up, and they were a CHR station, it was easy to have all these different programs - the Hot 9@9, the Weekly Top 40, the 7 o'clock Hit Challenge... but as we've drifted more HotAC, those kind of programs ARE difficult to keep up because the format concentrates more on variety of recurrants and golds than new music. Right now, the only thing preventing us from being the next SilkFM is the fact that we have the Saturday Night Hot Mix with DJ Krucial K. That's quite possibly the only program on out slate that appeals to a primarily younger audience, and I feel that with all the changes, it's going to be felt in younger demos come ratings.

I agree it's hard for Hot AC stations to have daily countdowns, since they will always be the same songs (same for AC stations).
But I think a weekly countdown isn't a stretch, though they aren't too interesting unless they are top 30 or top 40. With a top 20, it's the same old songs over and over.
The AC station in Vancouver has a weekly countdown, which is a joke since the songs are stagnant. I mean, who would consider Mandy Moore's "Cry" to be a new song. CKSY (Chatham-Kent) has a more interesting AC countdown.

In Saskatchewan, 4 of our major stations (in Saskatoon, Regina, Prince Albert, and North Battleford) have a collective top 30 chart, which shows the most popular songs on these stations across the province. Personally, I think an idea like that works fine, since there seem to be only about 20 currents on C95's playlist

Ooops... I wasn't implying that you meant a daily countdown, I just started my argument using the AC example. Sometimes when one starts talking about something, a lot of the times it is implied that it is in response to what the last person posted. In this case it wasn't. In other words, of course I knew you weren't suggesting a daily countdown for AC stations. Much apologies if you thought I was trying to make you look stupid or something. It was certainly not my intent.
