Chart Commentary
I wouldn't have believed it if you told me a month ago that "Gimme More" by Britney Spears would still be on top - and not only gaining, but the Greatest Gainer of the Week, to wit? The chart contributors, in general, have embraced the song, and it's over 300 points ahead of #2, "Wake Up Call" by Maroon5. So who knows when it will weaken... but I'll bet that when it does, it will tumble quickly...
Three newcomers to the Top 10 make things interesting in a way that seeing "1973" by James Blunt and "Shut Up And Drive" by Rihanna both in the Top 10 did not. Colbie Caillat's ever-growing "Bubbly" rises 11-8, while Rihanna replaces herself in the Top 10 with her duet with Ne-Yo, "Hate That I Love You" (19-9). It's already Rihanna's 6th Top 10 hit. Alicia Keys is back in the Top 10 too, for the first time since Fall '04 (which was when Usher's "My Boo", featuring Keys, appeared), with "No One" climbing 17-10. Celine Dion's "Taking Chances" is also eyeing the Top 10 from #12, only 42 points behind "No One". It could be her first Top Tenner in 5 years.
The Top 30 has some life shot into it this week as "Valerie" by Mark Ronson featuring Amy Winehouse vaults 58-28 - becoming Amy's fourth Top 30 hit this year with a shot at becoming her 3rd Top 10. "Good Life" by Kanye West & T-Pain has wasted no time in following up "Stronger" (which peaked at #3 two weeks ago), and rises 50-29.
Down further, Faber Drive's catchy "Tongue Tied" climbs to a new peak (44-33). Gwen Stefani is back in Top 40 territory with "Now That You Got It" (49-36), while Jennifer Lopez's "Do It Well" rebounds 51-37. Bruce Springsteen also finally cracks our Top 40 with his latest from the Magic CD, "Radio Nowhere", which also rebounds 69-39.
"Bleeding Love" by Leona Lewis (63-43) has a lot of fans on our board, and "I Get Around" by Canadian dance outfit Dragonette is rescued from chart oblivion, becoming our Fastest Riser of the Week within the Top 50 (89-49). Thanks to overseas popularity, Aly & AJ's "Potential Breakup Song" looks like it might have another run up the chart, starting with an 80-51 move.
13 not-too-shabby debuts round out the chart. After "Say It Right" flew into and off of the chart a few weeks back, Natasha Bedingfield's duet with Sean Kingston, "Love Like This", soars to the Highest Debut at #50. It's the fourth song from Natasha's NB CD to appear on the Globalchart this year. 10 weeks after Girls Aloud's "Sexy, No No No" debuted, that song is still around long enough to see its follow up, "Call The Shots", bow at #65. North American release awaits Robyn's self-titled CD in December, and single #2, "Handle Me", premieres at #72. A chart without a few songs by Akon? Not this week, as "Sorry (Blame It On Me)", appears at #76. Call it The Return of Chad - Santana brings back Nickelback frontman Kroeger for "Into The Night", which debuts at #80. Kroeger of course did a version of Santana's "Why Don't You And I", which got to #13 on the M4B Top 50 in 2003. And there is something for everyone in our remaining debuts by the likes of Megan McCauley, The Last Goodnight, Chris Brown & T-Pain, Mandy Moore, and even the Cast of "Hairspray"... Finally, we have the returns of Kylie Minogue (#94) and Duran Duran (#97), both of whom were last seen in these spaces back in 2005.
